Construction status of the Xihoumen Rail-cum-Road Bridge on the Ningbo-Zhoushan Railway
The Xihoumen Rail-cum-Road Bridge, the world's longest-span rail-cum-road sea-crossing bridge, crosses the Xihoumen waterway in Zhoushan, Zhejiang. With deep, fast-flowing water and harsh environmental and construction conditions, it is currently under construction.
In the past, the maximum water depth for sea-crossing bridges was no more than 40 meters, but the water depth at Pier No. 5 of the Xihoumen Rail-cum-Road Sea-Crossing Bridge reaches 60 meters. For this reason, the design adopts 18 bored cast-in-place piles with a diameter of 6.3 meters, which are the world's largest-diameter bridge bored pile foundations.

In the CCTV footage, the XCMG XR1600E stands majestically on the drilling platform over the river, drilling toward the rock beneath the seabed to bore 6.3-meter-diameter pile foundations. In the complex marine environment of strong winds, rapid currents, bare rock, and deep water, carrying out the construction of super-large-diameter bored piles is no easy task even for the XR1600E, known as the "World's No. 1 Drill."
Relying on multiple intelligent technologies such as the multi-gear mode of the power head, visualized drill pipe, and dual power system, as well as a comfortable and smooth driving experience, the XCMG XR1600E rotary drilling rig is not afraid of the drilling challenges of "deep water, bare rock, and 6.3m super-large diameter" in complex marine environments, and it boldly starts drilling.
In less than 3 days, the XR1600E drilled nearly 90m deep with outstanding efficiency. At the request of the construction project department, it took the lead in completing the drilling construction for lowering the 8-meter-diameter casing, "cracking the hardest nut in the project" and laying a solid foundation for the subsequent hole-forming construction of super-large-diameter piles.

Since its launch, the XCMG XR1600E rotary drilling rig has attracted great attention from the industry. With a maximum drilling diameter of 7.5m and a maximum drilling depth of 190m, it is known as the "World's No. 1 Drill." It is specially designed for super-large diameters above 6m and ultra-deep piles above 100m, and can meet the construction needs of super-hard pile foundations above 100MPa. Its launch marks that it can easily handle various complex working conditions in the field of bridge and tunnel construction worldwide.

In addition, the XR1600E adopts a modular design and is currently the world's first rotary drilling rig that can be fully transported in separate modules. After disassembly, each module weighs no more than 50 tons, so it can easily access mountainous areas and even construction sites at relatively high altitudes.

Hard rock, large piles, and rushing currents—rotary drilling and cutting are in full swing. Since 2012, XCMG has successfully developed 60 models of rotary drilling rigs, participated in the construction of nearly 20,000 bridges, and contributed to bridge and tunnel lengths exceeding 100,000 kilometers. It has successfully solved the construction challenges of super-large-diameter and ultra-deep piles for major river- and sea-crossing bridges such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, and the Sichuan-Tibet line. XCMG is committed to using high-precision, advanced equipment to realize the beautiful vision of "a bridge flying across north and south, turning the natural moat into a thoroughfare."
