Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 2: A terminal striding toward the world

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 2 is one of the largest terminal complexes currently in operation in China.

It creates a brand-new aviation hub connecting the Asia-Pacific region with all continents, helping Baiyun Airport advance toward becoming a world-class airport.

The design concept of Terminal 2 derives from "white clouds" (baiyun), which naturally aligns with "Baiyun International Airport" and also heralds the dreamlike journey on which passengers are about to embark, flying through blue skies and white clouds.

01

An innovative, advanced and unique new Lingnan gateway airport terminal

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of China's three national-level aviation hub gateways.

Terminal 2 has a total floor area of 658,700 square meters, and the supporting transportation center and parking building have a floor area of 208,400 square meters. It enables rapid transfers among various landside transportation modes and convenient parking for passengers.Terminal 2 and Terminal 1 complement each other, forming a "twin-star" terminal, with a total designed annual passenger volume of 80 million.

Together they support the great strategic goals of building Guangzhou into a core city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, building a world-class airport cluster in the Pearl River Delta, and building China into a world aviation power.

02

An innovative configuration for an extra-large composite aviation hub terminal

A hybrid configuration of "pier-style + front-row style."

The pier-style + front-row style hybrid configuration offers a long aircraft parking frontage, many contact stands, and many large contact stands at close range.

Passenger walking distances are moderate, and international and domestic swaps are convenient.

03

Convenient and efficient passenger and baggage flows

The main process design features short passenger walking distances, a single direction, and very clear spatial guidance.

The domestic mixed-flow mode has arrivals and departures on the same level, making the flow simple and efficient.

It has the most complete international and domestic hub transfer processes, resolving passenger arrival, transfer and waiting on the same level.

Bright atrium of the Ground Transportation Center (GTC)

Integrated landside transportation design. It achieves seamless connections among various transportation modes such as intercity rail, metro, buses and private cars. Major transportation transfers are resolved on the same level, shortening walking distances.

An atypical commercial complex closely integrated with passenger flows

The innovative atypical commercial complex is arranged in conjunction with the passenger flows, creating a unique commercial layout model for hub airport terminals.

China's first fully DCV baggage handling system

The baggage system adopts internationally advanced DCV tote automatic sorting technology. Sorting is fast, the error rate is low, and efficiency is high.

The check-in baggage drop-off section adopts a self-service mode and reserves conditions for switching between traditional and self-service systems.

Combined with smart devices, it enables contactless clearance, creating conditions for the development of a fully self-service smart airport.

04

Large convertible international/domestic stands

The large international/domestic "convertible stands" and "boarding bridge fixed ends" (including Category F) cater to the future fleet mix system and development needs of China Southern Airlines.

It provides the most efficient apron and stand configuration, meeting the operational needs of China Southern Airlines as a base and hub carrier.

Efficient and convenient boarding bridges at large convertible stands

The front-row golden large stands with the most convenient flows and shortest processes are set as domestic/international convertible mixed stands.

Through the boarding bridge fixed ends, the stands are connected to the various arrival and departure levels of the terminal, improving stand use flexibility and passenger handling efficiency and meeting the airline's need for rapid business growth.

05

A unique "twin-star" terminal

Harmonious and consistent architectural form

Terminal 2 is harmonious and consistent with Terminal 1.

It retains distinctive elements such as the curved main building, the inverted-V columns and the tensile membrane canopies.

The tensile membrane canopies, suited to the rainy and hot climate, provide passengers with a good travel experience.

Tensile membrane canopies suited to the Lingnan climate

The tensile membrane canopy is one of Baiyun Airport's distinctive facilities and landmarks. Its continuous multi-span arch shape echoes the curved cornice of the terminal's south facade above and below, and suits the rainy and hot climate of the Lingnan region.

06

A garden-style terminal integrating Lingnan traditional culture and regional characteristics

Lingnan Garden

The distinctive Lingnan Garden between the security and joint inspection halls and the North Pier allows passengers to experience the charm of traditional gardens within a modern terminal; it is an excellent practice of integrating humanity and nature.

The introduction of the garden enhances natural ventilation, improves building energy efficiency, and improves the air quality of the building's micro-environment.

International arriving passengers at the North Pier can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Lingnan Garden, leaving them with a wonderful first impression of Guangzhou.

07

Integrated design of structure, architecture and finishes

China's first rotating gradient ceiling

The check-in and security halls, combined with the space-frame structure, feature China's first "cloud concept" rotating gradient ceiling.

The cultural and commercial plaza at the center of the departure hall

The finishes and the flowing architectural form are completed in one continuous effort, expressing a feeling of "lightness, floating and flow" and forming a complete and dynamic interior spatial interface.

Check-in islands with integrated design

The check-in islands adopt an integrated design, highly integrating the functions of various disciplines and end-user needs.

The aircraft-inspired shape design reflects the sense of speed of air transport.

Modular multi-functional curtain wall system

A modular multi-functional curtain wall system design is adopted, effectively concealing equipment pipelines such as rainwater pipes.

The glass curtain wall on the west side features China's first integrated design of wing-shaped electrically adjustable external shading louvers.

Continuous and smooth arched non-linear metal roof

The arched non-linear metal roof has a continuous and smooth shape, with the main building and connecting buildings joined in one continuous effort.

08

China's largest green Three-Star terminal in operation

Terminal 2 adopts various green and energy-saving design measures and has obtained the national "Three-Star Green Building Design Label Certificate." It is the first Three-Star green large public transportation hub building in a hot and humid region, and the first airport in China to install large-area solar photovoltaic panels on the roof of the terminal main building.

Wing-shaped adjustable electric external shading louvers are installed in conjunction with the west-side glass curtain wall, contributing to the green Three-Star rating.

09

China's largest SKYTRAX "Global Five-Star Terminal"

Terminal 2 was rated a "Global Five-Star Terminal" by SKYTRAX, the authoritative global civil aviation transport research and certification body, for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021.

In 2022, it further won honors including SKYTRAX 2022 "World's Best Airport in the 40 Million Passenger Category, No. 1."
