On June 1, residents of some buildings in the Country Garden Fengjin Courtyard residential community in Balitai Town, Jinnan District, Tianjin, were awakened by community workers knocking on their doors in the early hours of June 1 and told to evacuate urgently. The People's Government of Jinnan District, Tianjin, issued a notice stating: at 18:20 on May 31, it was discovered that part of the road surface on Balitai East Road in Balitai Town, Jinnan District, had bulged and cracked, that part of the lawn and road surface in Country Garden Fengjin Courtyard had cracked, and that some underground parking garages showed wall cracks and water seepage. How severe is the damage to the buildings in the community? What is the resettlement situation?

The ground outside the community has bulged in waves, and the road surface has expanded and cracked

On June 1, at Country Garden Fengjin Courtyard, multiple police cars were seen parked about 100 meters from the community, and many fire trucks, cranes, excavators and other vehicles were also parked on both sides of the road, with workers carrying out road repair work.

Not far outside the east gate of Country Garden Fengjin Courtyard, wave-like bulging of the ground and cracks in the road surface could be clearly seen.

At the site, several temporary offices built from blue and white containers had been set up, with signs printed on A4 paper and posted at the entrances reading "Expert Office" and "Temporary Command Office."

There were many staff members at the site. In addition to repair workers in construction clothing, in the green belt near the cracked road section, workers wearing green reflective vests were operating drones.

Multiple buildings in the community were damaged, and cracks opened in the grass

Entering the community from the east gate, the two high-rise buildings on the left are Buildings 37 and 38, and the area in front of them has been enclosed with blue sheet-metal panels. Walking forward along the sheet-metal panels, there is an unclosed road; walking in, the cracking at the base of Buildings 37, 38 and 39 can be clearly seen.

Among them, downstairs of Building 39, two surveying and mapping workers were using instruments to measure the degree of deviation of the building. Judging from its appearance, Building 39 seemed to be the most seriously affected: bricks were exposed at the bottom of the west side of the building, drainage pipes were clearly visible, and the largest crack in the grass was visually estimated at about 40 centimeters.

Mr. Li, an owner living in Building 38 of the community, said that on the evening of May 31, after hearing a noise, someone found that a geothermal well drilling tower several hundred meters outside the east gate of the community had collapsed, and the news then spread in the community owners' group chat.

Nearly 3,000 residents evacuated urgently

From the evening of May 31 to the early hours of June 1, residents in residential buildings such as Buildings 37, 38 and 39 were told to evacuate quickly. Ms. Chen, who lives in Building 52, said that residents of more than a dozen buildings in the community, from Building 37 to Building 52, had all been evacuated. At a glance, the bases of these residential buildings had all been enclosed with blue sheet-metal panels; they are basically 25-story high-rise buildings.

The nighttime evacuation was sudden, and many residents did not take many belongings with them; some returned to retrieve items and even called moving companies. Yao Chenchen, a staff member of the Balitai Town Government, said that more than 99% of residents, nearly 3,000 people, had been evacuated, most of them resettled in hotels around the town. Follow-up work will be carried out according to the opinions of professionals. The cause of the incident is currently under further investigation.
