At this launch event, two engineering experts will share their views on the China IV emission standards for the non-road sector. In recent years, the idea that humanity, nature, the economy and society need to develop in harmony has taken root in people's minds. Green economic development models and lifestyles are taking shape. On December 1, Beijing took the lead in implementing the "Beijing 6B" gasoline and diesel local standards and the China IV standard for non-road mobile machinery emissions, firing the first shot in the China IV upgrade.

(The following content comes from an interview by Xiaoke with a senior engineer)
How should we understand the difference between China III and China IV?
As we know, in the China III era, engines achieved the China III emission standard through electronically controlled technology that precisely controlled fuel injection. By China IV, because emission limits on particulate matter are stricter, engines must be fitted with after-treatment systems to meet the requirements. At the same time, the fuel system, intake and exhaust system, and control system of the original China III engines all need to be adjusted, which, when mapped onto the complete machine product, requires a complete redesign of the engine compartment layout and control scheme. It can be said that the China IV upgrade is, for mobile air compressors, a whole new product development, and the after-treatment system is the most critical part.
What changes has Atlas Copco made in response to the China IV emission standards?
Reliable, technologically advanced diesel engines are probably the key part. The technologies used in the diesel engines include advanced electronic control, advanced fuel systems, advanced turbocharging, DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), allowing the optimal after-treatment solution to be matched to different models. In addition, on top of the original China III basis, the air compressor as a whole not only adds after-treatment to improve emissions, but the compressor's own efficiency has also been raised to a new level.
So at what stage is Atlas Copco's product upgrade for China IV at present?
At the end of September this year, several machines from projects we are developing were all transported to the Kunlun Pass in Golmud, Qinghai Province, where, at an altitude of 4,500 meters, they were tested for high altitude and low temperature, comprehensively checking machine startup, loading, changing operating conditions and other tests. The tests proved that this batch of China IV machines can fully and successfully adapt to use in high-altitude, low-temperature environments.

Xiaoke loves hearing stories
Please go ahead!
As is well known, mobile air compressors are used very widely, from well drilling and irrigation to mountain drilling and mining, from municipal construction to industrial oil and gas development. The operating conditions for air compressors are harsh: they need to work under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, endure dust and blowing sand, and also be able to fight in the extreme cold of the plateau. To meet all these working conditions, the new machines need to undergo various rigorous tests, and high-altitude testing is one of the important ones.

In 2021, Atlas Copco's new China IV models carried out plateau tests as scheduled at the Kunlun Pass at 4,500 meters. During this test, we encountered snowy, windy and extremely cold weather. Thick snow covered the machines, and under such conditions, both the machines and the test personnel faced enormous challenges.

After pressing the start button, the air seemed to freeze, and all eyes were fixed on the machine. The engine speed rose rapidly to idle amid the cranking sound, and in the subsequent series of tests, the machine's various performance indicators fully met the design requirements.
What an exhilarating test experience that sounds like!
Although many hardships were encountered along the way
this air compressor still lived up to expectations
and delivered a satisfactory result
to all the engineers who poured their hearts into it!
Now that the story is over, Xiaoke has one last quiz question for you!
(Single choice) In the China IV product upgrade, which part is the most critical link?
A. Intake and exhaust system
B. Fuel system
C. After-treatment system
D. Control system

So, did you get this question right?
