跨越元江，连通两边陡峭的高山，832.2米长的元江特大桥，就像一条钢铁巨龙，成为中老铁路沿线的亮丽风景。这座大桥总共有4个桥墩，其中最高的3号桥墩高度达到154米，相当于50多层楼房的高度，位居同类桥梁世界第一。同时，大桥主桥采用上承式连续钢桁梁结构，249米的主跨也创下了同类型桥梁世界第一。
一座大桥，创造了两项世界第一。在两边山体坡度达到70度，桥面到江面高差237米，同时还有峡谷大风影响的情况下，154米的“世界第一高墩”也给建设者提出了极高的挑战。经过多次专家论证和方案比对，最终创造性地提出了在确保承重达标的前提下，有效减轻桥墩自身重量的解决方案。
