The reporter learned from the Tibet Autonomous Region Department of Transport that on October 1, the main tunnel of the 6,995-meter-long high-altitude Jueba Mountain Extra-Long Tunnel on National Highway 318 in Qamdo City officially broke through. Once the Jueba Mountain Extra-Long Tunnel is completed and open to traffic, it will shorten the vehicle journey by 19 kilometers and reduce travel time by more than one hour.

The Jueba Mountain section, located in Mangkang County, Qamdo City, Tibet, is one of the bottleneck sections of National Highway 318. The 29-kilometer winding mountain road clings to cliffs and overlooks deep ravines, with multiple groups of continuous hairpin bends, and is prone to frequent disasters such as landslides, mudslides and snow accumulation. Construction of the Jueba Mountain Extra-Long Tunnel began in May 2018. It has two lanes in both directions, a designed driving speed of 40 kilometers per hour, and is expected to be ready for traffic by the end of August 2022.
