Recently, India's largest diameter tunnel—the twin-tube Igatpuri twin-tube tunnel located in Maharashtra—achieved breakthrough.

The Igatpuri tunnel project is valued at US$373 million, with a total length of 8 km, making it currently India's fourth-longest tunnel. Each tube has a diameter of 17.5 m and is constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The project is part of the 700 km Mumbai–Nagpur Super Expressway, aimed at reducing travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from the current 14–15 hours to 8–9 hours. Over the past two years, approximately 1,500 workers and 150 engineers have participated in the construction. The tunnel will now proceed to lining construction and is scheduled for completion in June 2022.
