8月7日12时许，伴随着盾构机的轰鸣声，佛山地铁“天佑66号”盾构机破土而出，桂城站~南海广场站区间右线顺利贯通，至此桂城中心区域迎来了佛山地铁三号线首条双线贯通隧道，该线北段又完成了一重要施工节点。
桂城站~南海广场站区间采用土压平衡盾构机掘进，左线于2021年1月12日贯通，右线于2021年4月6日始发，全程沿南海大道敷设，全长781米，地面交通繁忙，沿线有供水、燃气、通信等多种管线，两侧毗邻多栋建筑物，安全风险管控要求高。该区间地质复杂，包含全断面富水砂层、凸起岩脉。
