On July 30, 2021, the Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge officially opened to traffic. The bridge was jointly invested in and constructed by China Construction Yichang Wujiagang Operation Co., Ltd. and the local government, managed by Yichang Urban Construction Investment Holding Group, surveyed and designed by China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute, and provided with health monitoring by China Railway Bridge & Tunnel Technology Co., Ltd.
The bridge is located about 6.1 kilometers upstream of the Yichang Yangtze River Highway Bridge. It starts from Jiangcheng Avenue in the south, crosses Tan'ai Road, Binjiang Road, the Yangtze River, and Wulin Road along the route, and ends at Huaxi Road, with a main line length of 2.813 kilometers. The bridge site area is a buffer zone of the Chinese Sturgeon Nature Reserve of the Yangtze River and an area with dense activity of finless porpoises and Chinese sucker fish. In order to protect the surrounding environment and the rare biodiversity of the Yangtze River, the main bridge adopts a large-span steel box girder suspension bridge with a main span of 1,160 meters crossing the river in a single span, achieving a coordinated unity of the bridge's traffic function and environmental protection.
The Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge has innovated multiple construction technologies for long-span bridges: First, the south anchorage was the first to study and adopt a shallow-buried anchorage structure with a composite foundation; second, the north anchorage was studied using a tunnel anchorage structure suitable for the softer rock area of a long-span suspension bridge; third, the main cable form of the long-span suspension bridge was innovated, and for the first time a new type of main cable using standard-diameter steel wire and composite cable strands was studied and adopted, making the main cable tighter and more efficient to manufacture; fourth, an upgrade technology for steel box girders was developed and successfully implemented, innovating a new full-penetration welding technology for the U-ribs of the orthotropic deck to prevent fracture and cracking.
The health monitoring system of the Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge was undertaken by Bridge & Tunnel Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute. Combining the structural characteristics of the bridge and management and maintenance needs, the system monitors the bridge site environment, structural response, and traffic conditions. It consists of an automated monitoring subsystem, an electronic inspection subsystem, a traffic detection subsystem, a data storage and management subsystem, a structural early warning and safety assessment subsystem, and a user interface subsystem, and reserves interfaces for other systems, providing technical support for scientific management and maintenance of the bridge.
The completion and opening of the Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge is of great significance for Yichang City to achieve the common development of "both banks of the river" and to build a key project of the "four vertical and five horizontal" rapid skeleton road network. It is also of great significance for advancing the regional development of "one main lead, two wings driven, and full-area coordination" and for building a regional central city in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
