On June 28, the main structure of the shield tunnel segments for the entire Nanning-Chongzuo Railway in Guangxi, constructed by the Nanning Project Department of the Housing and Bridge Company under China Railway 14th Bureau Group, was successfully completed, laying the foundation for the goal of opening to traffic in 2022.

Since construction began on April 1, 2019, the project department has overcome numerous difficulties such as a tight schedule, heavy tasks and changeable weather. Guided by the basic principles of "high standards, strict requirements, low cost and a family culture," it gradually standardized the building of its site and put the project into production in only 60 days. During production, it carried out activities such as the "100-day intensive work" labor competition, set up "Party member safety pioneer posts" and established "youth commando teams," and formulated reward and penalty measures to ensure weekly progress against daily targets, ten-day progress against weekly targets, monthly progress against ten-day targets and annual progress against monthly targets, thereby ensuring the steady advancement of segment and box culvert prefabrication tasks.

In the earlier stage, because Nanning has a long rainy season, the project department continuously optimized the construction plan, reasonably reversed the schedule, and actively allocated machinery and personnel, achieving the approach of "working intensively on sunny days, racing against time on cloudy days and working skillfully on rainy days." At the same time, professional technicians were assigned to each construction area to strengthen operational supervision and conduct technical briefings for every construction process, ensuring that technical specifications were implemented in place. To ensure product quality, the project department established a complete safety and quality assurance system and strictly conducted physical testing of finished segments. Three-ring assembly, leakage detection, bending tests, rebound tests and rebar cover detection were carried out strictly at the prescribed frequencies, with a pass rate of 100%. At the same time, the pass rate of finished segment tests also reached 100%.

In the face of Guangxi's long-standing high temperatures, the project department arranged work reasonably and adjusted on-site personnel operations, adopting a schedule of "working at both ends and resting in the middle" to avoid the midday high-temperature period by staggering working hours. At the same time, it delivered mung bean soup and watermelon to frontline workers every day and distributed heatstroke prevention and cooling items such as Huoxiang Zhengqi liquid and cooling oil. On this basis, full-time safety officers were assigned to supervise frontline work dynamics and high-temperature heatstroke prevention reminders throughout the entire process, which both stimulated the enthusiasm of frontline employees and coordinated the advancement of all work under high temperatures. In view of the weather characteristics of Nanning, Guangxi, which is accompanied by typhoons every year, the project department installed guy ropes and ground anchors during plant construction, strengthened the stability of the foundations of the office and living areas, provided advance warnings for natural disasters such as typhoons and thunderstorms, and promptly reported them internally via WeChat groups, thereby implementing the safety policy of "prevention first" through the early warning mechanism and building a strong "firewall" for safety management.

The project department continuously innovated its management model, always centered on project construction, took standardized management as the starting point, practiced the concept of "Quality China Railway Construction," and devoted itself to the goal of building "Quality Nanchong." It combined project construction with local characteristics and created a green, safe and civilized construction site. To build a high-quality and exemplary project, the project department created "fourfold management," namely factory-based construction production, professional management, intelligent production and standardized management; and "7S" management, covering sorting, setting in order, sweeping, cleaning,素养, safety and saving, continuously stimulating employees' internal motivation, promptly identifying, discovering and summarizing distinctive practices, and promoting and applying them. It continuously innovated in the technical field and pioneered the country's first independent curing production line for large-diameter shield tunnel segments. The entire production line uses a PLC control system to achieve precise segment curing. The segments are solid inside and beautiful outside, with no seepage, cracks or leakage, and have received unanimous recognition from the owner unit, becoming a demonstration base for municipal railway and other engineering construction in the Guangxi region.

It is reported that the newly built Nanning-Chongzuo Railway project is the first intercity high-speed railway in Guangxi independently invested and constructed by Guangxi, and is also an important transportation facility for the Belt and Road Initiative and the construction of the China-Singapore Connectivity Southern Corridor. The Nanning-Chongzuo Railway has a total length of 119.294 kilometers, including 5,725 meters of tunnels. The project department is responsible for the prefabrication of 2,003 rings of segments and 2,003 box culverts for the entire line. After completion and opening to traffic, it will become a convenient land route from China to Vietnam, gradually transforming China's western "border city" into Southeast Asia's "bridgehead."
