At 18:16 on June 18, construction of the ballastless track bed was completed in the Wushan Tunnel, a controlling project on the Chongqing section of the Zhengzhou-Wanzhou High-Speed Railway, marking major progress in the railway's construction and laying a solid foundation for the opening of the entire line to traffic.

Located in Wushan County, Chongqing, the Wushan Tunnel was designed by China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co., Ltd. With a total length of 16.571 km, it is a single-tube double-track tunnel designed for a speed of 350 km/h and is the second-longest tunnel on the Chongqing section of the Zhengzhou-Wanzhou Railway. The tunnel passes through the Wushan Syncline and the Liangzi Anticline, where geological conditions are extremely complex. The strata consist mainly of mudstone and mudstone intercalated with sandstone, with soft surrounding rock accounting for a large proportion (Grade IV and Grade V surrounding rock account for 95%, and Grade III surrounding rock accounts for 5%). There are also adverse geological conditions such as bedding-parallel eccentric pressure, karst and karst water, rock piles and landslides, making it a high-risk tunnel.

Because the tunnel has many working faces, construction organization is relatively difficult; in addition, the long single-head excavation distance creates great pressure in terms of ventilation, mucking and drainage. The tunnel passes beneath the Yuejialing Tunnel of the Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway, with a minimum clear height difference of only 15 m. The cover is relatively shallow and the rock is soft; the excavation span of the newly built tunnel beneath it is large (up to 16.8 m), and excavation can easily cause settlement of the tunnel above and subsequently cracking of the highway tunnel, making design and construction difficult and high-risk. To address these difficulties, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group conducted comparative studies of multiple schemes and adopted targeted strengthening measures. For the section passing beneath the expressway tunnel, measures such as special reinforced structures, advanced large pipe-roof support, grouting reinforcement of the surrounding rock and the double-side drift method were adopted to ensure the safety of tunnel construction and highway operation.

The Zhengzhou-Wanzhou High-Speed Railway starts in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, and runs southwest through Pingdingshan and Nanyang, Xiangyang in Hubei Province, to Wanzhou District in Chongqing. The newly built line is about 818 km long, with a design speed of 350 km/h, and about 184 km lies within Chongqing. The Zhengzhou-Xiangyang section opened to traffic on December 1, 2019, and construction of the Chongqing section is being stepped up.

At the Zhengzhou hub, the Zhengzhou-Wanzhou High-Speed Railway connects northward with the Beijing-Guangzhou and Xuzhou-Lanzhou high-speed railways; at Wanzhou, it reaches the Chongqing hub via the Chongqing-Wanzhou High-Speed Railway and connects with the Chengdu-Chongqing and Chongqing-Kunming high-speed railways. It is an important part of the Yangtze River corridor and the Hohhot-Nanning corridor in China's "eight vertical and eight horizontal" high-speed railway network. Once the entire line is completed and opened to traffic, it will become a new convenient and fast main passenger corridor from the southwest region to the Central Plains, North China and Northeast China.
