Recently, the North Baihua Tunnel of the Huangshi Modern Tram Phase I Project in Hubei—China's first tram mountain tunnel—was successfully holed through, marking the full breakthrough of both tunnels of the Baihua Tunnel.

The Huangshi Modern Tram Phase I Project in Hubei is currently the largest physical project under construction in Huangshi. The line has a total length of 26.88 kilometers and includes one vehicle depot and 30 stations (including one reserved station), with a total investment of 4.573 billion yuan. The Baihua Tunnel is a key and difficult control project.

It is understood that the Baihua Tunnel is located on the shortest route to the core area of Huangshi, but the width of Baihua Road at the tunnel exit is limited. If the "highway + tram tunnel" scheme were adopted, it would create traffic impact and congestion there. Therefore, the Baihua Tunnel was designed as a tram tunnel, making it China's first tram mountain tunnel.

The Baihua Tunnel Project has a total length of 2,562 meters, including a tunnel section of 1,990 meters (of which the north tunnel is 1,742 meters long and the south tunnel is 248 meters long) and a subgrade section of 572 meters. The north tunnel, which achieved breakthrough this time, officially started tunnel excavation on October 12, 2020. After 228 days of hard work, it was finally successfully holed through before the end of May. Together with the south tunnel, which was holed through on April 28 this year, the civil tunnel portion of the Baihua Tunnel has now been fully completed.

According to reports, next, the project department will carry out construction of the center partition wall, lighting installation, drainage, fire protection, and other works. The overall project (excluding track laying) is expected to be completed in October.

The Huangshi Modern Tram Phase I Project in Hubei connects urban clusters, transportation hubs, universities, and commercial complexes, and can be extended in the future to connect with the SF Airport and Huangshi New Port. Its completion is of great significance for building a three-dimensional urban transportation corridor, alleviating urban traffic congestion, improving the travel environment for residents, promoting green travel, and revitalizing Huangshi, an old industrial city, with new vitality and vigor.
