Guangzhou Metro Line 11 Sees Two Tunnels Launch and Two Break Through

Recently, Metro Line 11 completed several construction milestones: the left-line tunnel of the Chishajiao–Pazhou section and the right-line tunnel of the Liuhualu–Caihongqiao section both achieved shield launching, while the double-track small-mileage mined tunnel of the Huashi–Tianhedong section and the small pilot drift of Tianhedong Station both broke through successfully.

The left-line tunnel of the Chishajiao–Pazhou section is about 1,580 meters long. After departing from Chishajiao Station, the shield machine bored eastward along Xinjiao East Road, then turned north to pass beneath Beishan Creek and Huangpu Creek, entered Huizhan South 4th Road, and passed beneath the operating Metro Line 8 and Xingang East Road before reaching Pazhou Station. Chishajiao Station, where this shield launch took place, is a same-platform interchange station between Metro Line 11 and Metro Line 12. Because the station is located on a busy major municipal arterial road, construction involved the relocation of multiple major utility lines, repeated traffic diversion modifications, and the rerouting of creeks and bridges, resulting in complex working conditions and great construction difficulty. At the same time, construction also faced challenges such as limited site space caused by simultaneous development of nearby plots and secondary relocation of high-voltage power lines.

The right-line tunnel of the Liuhualu–Caihongqiao section is about 1,173 meters long. The launch shaft is located at Caihongqiao Station inside Liuhua Lake Park on the north side of Dongfeng West Road. After launching from Caihongqiao Station, the shield machine must successively pass beneath the Liuhua Lake Tunnel, Liuhua Lake, and the Sima Creek culvert, then be lifted out after reaching Liuhualu Station. Caihongqiao Station, serving as the shield launch station, is also an ultra-wide, ultra-large underground station interchanging among Metro Line 8, Line 11, and Line 13, with an excavation volume of more than 400,000 cubic meters. Due to multiple impacts including utility relocation and restrictions on muck removal conditions, station excavation was once hindered, making it difficult to provide conditions for shield launching.

To ensure construction safety and minimize the impact on surrounding buildings and residents, Guangzhou Metro, together with the contractor China Railway No. 3 Engineering Group, adhered to a people-centered approach, optimized the construction plan, and actively promoted the application of new techniques. After multiple rounds of demonstration by technical experts, the metro builders changed the originally planned blasting construction to "single-arm roadheader excavation on the upper bench + blasting on the lower bench," which improved safety factors while increasing efficiency, creating favorable conditions for tunnel breakthrough.
