苏锡常南部高速公路常州至无锡段是江苏省“十五射六纵十横”高速公路网规划中“十五射”的组成部分，其中太湖隧道是全线关键控制性工程，全长10.79公里，净宽17.45米，是目前国内在建的最长湖底隧道。
据悉，太湖隧道项目将于今年底全部完工，预计项目建成后，将有力提升沪宁通道作为国家综合运输大通道的功能作用，对苏锡常城市发展具有重要意义，将成为拉动长三角经济发展的新引擎。
