With the development of the social economy and the improvement of people's living standards, people have begun to pursue more comfort and safety in housing. However, building quality issues still trouble us from time to time. How to ensure the safety of buildings, especially public buildings and residential buildings, "leaning buildings", "brittle buildings", "cracked buildings"... have become hot topics of discussion across society. So, as the "chief steward" of an engineering project, how does a project manager view the issue of building safety? Does he have any tricks for solving building safety? With these questions, the reporter recently interviewed Lv Huangbing, an outstanding project manager of the 6th National Steel Structure Engineering and Chief Engineer of China Construction Steel Structure Beijing Branch.
Reporter: Chief Engineer Lv, thank you for taking the time to accept my interview. First, please introduce your professional experience and talk about your feelings about being a project manager over the years?
Lv Huangbing: After graduating from university in 1997, I joined China Construction Third Engineering Bureau and worked on steel structures at its Second Company until 2006. In 2006, China Construction Third Engineering Bureau integrated all its subordinate steel structure companies into China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Steel Structure, and I became a member of it. In 2008, China State Construction Engineering Corporation, with China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Steel Structure as the main body, integrated some steel structure resources within the China State Construction system to formally establish China Construction Steel Structure, and I officially became a member of China Construction Steel Structure.
When I graduated, I first went to the construction site, working with frontline workers, eating and living together, often working overtime until after 10 p.m., mainly assisting the workers with simple manual labor. I did this for about half a year, and I feel it was very helpful to me, mainly giving me an intuitive understanding and personal experience of steel structures. After that, I worked as a foreman. At that time, the foreman was responsible for "comprehensive" work, managing many things on the site. The first project I did was the Xiangfan Thermal Power Plant, with over 4,000 tons. Later, I did several power plants and equipment installations, then light steel factory buildings. At that time, there were many light steel factory buildings, and we did everything from design to processing, installation, and maintenance systems. Later, because light steel factory buildings had lower technical content, the company took a high-end route and did fewer light steel factory buildings. We did more super high-rise buildings, mainly Wuhan Poly, Chengdu Chuantou, Guiyang Convention and Exhibition, etc., as well as Wuhan Tianhe Airport, Wuhan Railway Station, Guiyang Olympic Sports Center, Wuhan International Expo Center, Henan Radio and Television Tower (the world's tallest all-steel structure tower, very distinctive), etc.
Along the way, I was mainly responsible for technology, and worked as foreman, production manager, project chief engineer, and project manager. In 2004, I became the chief engineer of the Steel Structure Company of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Second Company. From 2006 to 2009, I was the chief engineer of the Wuhan Branch of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Steel Structure. In 2010, I came to the Beijing Branch of China Construction Steel Structure, still as chief engineer. The position hasn't changed, but the company's scale has grown a lot, especially the Beijing Branch, which has developed rapidly and expanded very quickly. This year alone, there are more than ten super high-rise buildings under construction, including Tianjin 117, Shenyang Hang Lung, Shenyang Maoye, Tianjin Yujiapu, Tianjin International Trade, Tianjin Baolong, Shijiazhuang Kaiyuan, Ordos Guotai, Taiyuan Hubin Square, Shijiazhuang Suning Appliance, Tianjin Modern City, Beijing Tongying, etc. Large-span buildings under construction include Qingdao Railway Station, Tianjin Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Phase II, etc. At present, the development situation of China's construction industry is very good, and steel structures have broad development space. Because we are in the big family of China State Construction, we get more projects. In addition, through participating in the construction of these projects, I have also met many industry experts, such as Professor Chen Zhihua of Tianjin University, Vice President Zhang Ailin of Beijing University of Technology, Professor Guo Yanlin of Tsinghua University, and many experts from the China Construction Steel Structure Association and the Building Steel Structure Expert Committee of the Metal Structure Association. They have given us a lot of help, which is one of the reasons why China Construction Steel Structure can achieve these results. Whenever we encounter difficulties in projects, the first thing we think of is to seek help from these experts.
Reporter: From your introduction, it can be seen that you have done many steel structure engineering projects and are very familiar with them. It can be seen that you are full of affection for the projects you have done. So, among these projects, which ones are you most satisfied with?
Lv Huangbing: The project I am most satisfied with as a project manager is the Chongqing Luohuang Power Plant. From the start of the project, I participated in its construction until the completion acceptance. I was involved in the entire process of this project. This is a thermal power plant project with two 600,000-kilowatt generating units. Because I had done several power plant projects before, I had accumulated some experience. This project faced many difficulties at the time: first, the contract unit price was very low and the schedule was tight; second, there was a "labor shortage" at the time, and the civil construction schedule was very tight, which put higher demands on the steel structure schedule; third, this project had a lot of high-altitude work, and construction safety required extra attention. The project started at the end of 2004 and ended in early 2006. We did very well throughout the process, with no casualties. The construction progress and project quality were affirmed by the owner and supervisor, and it won the "China Construction Cup" of China State Construction Engineering Corporation. One of the advantages of steel structures is that they can "rush" the schedule. In the final settlement, the benefits were relatively good, turning losses into profits. In addition to social benefits, certain economic benefits were also achieved. Therefore, I am most impressed by this project.
From a technical perspective, the project that impressed me most is Wuhan Railway Station. I was mainly responsible for the early stage of this project, from bidding to the lifting of the first steel column. I stayed on this project for more than a year. The design of this project is very special. The overall shape, to convey the meaning of "thoroughfare of nine provinces", is designed as—a large roof in the middle and four pieces on each side. The high roof symbolizes "the rise of central China", and the overall shape resembles a yellow crane. The project is very difficult, so the owner said, "It is precisely because the construction is difficult that we found China Construction Steel Structure to do it." During construction, we immediately studied problems when encountered, overcame difficulties in the process, and continuously discussed many plans, optimizing step by step. The final result was very good, and it won the "Luban Prize". We also applied for a Class A project of the Ministry of Railways—equivalent to a national-level project. I was responsible for the application, and the results were appraised as internationally advanced. Through this project, I feel I learned a lot and accumulated a lot of experience.
