On August 27, Xin Jie, Chairman of Shenzhen Metro Group, revealed at the opening ceremony of the Shenzhen Metro 20th Anniversary Exhibition that Shenzhen Metro currently has 273 kilometers under construction with over 400 work sites, the highest peak in Shenzhen Metro's construction history.

The Shenzhen Metro "Pengcheng Community, Shenzhen Metro Acceleration" 20th Anniversary Exhibition opened that afternoon at Shenzhen Metro Futian Station, recreating in various forms the 20-year journey of Shenzhen Metro.

Shenzhen Metro was established on July 31, 1998. From initially 1 line of 40 kilometers to today's 7 lines and 265 kilometers; average daily passenger flow has grown from less than 100,000 at the beginning of operation to 4.28 million today. Shenzhen Metro has become the main force of public transportation, and urban life has become more comfortable and convenient because of the metro. Xin Jie stated that Shenzhen Metro currently operates 265 kilometers of metro lines, with a public transport share of 42%, and is also undertaking the construction of 273 kilometers of new metro lines and multiple intercity railways, becoming an important force serving urban development.

Benchmarking against world-class cities, Shenzhen launched the revision of its long-term rail transit plan in 2016. The fourth phase of the Shenzhen Metro project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in July 2017, including 5 projects: Line 6 Branch, Line 12, Line 13, Line 14, and Line 16, with a total scale of 148.9 kilometers and 83 stations. After the fourth phase is completed and opened, Shenzhen's total rail transit mileage will reach 580 kilometers, further optimizing Shenzhen's urban spatial layout, building a more complete rail transit network, and creating a more convenient and efficient urban rail transit life circle.

According to the plan, by 2035, Shenzhen will form a rail transit network of 33 lines with a total mileage of 1,335 kilometers, 4.7 times the current opened mileage. By then, a dense rail transit network radiating across Shenzhen will be formed, promoting closer connections between Shenzhen and surrounding cities, further improving the urban environment, building a livable city, and enhancing the city's comprehensive carrying capacity.

Today, Shenzhen Metro continues to set records for million-level passenger flows. Currently, the cumulative average daily passenger volume of Shenzhen Metro's lines reaches 4.28 million. On July 20, 2018, the total passenger volume of Shenzhen Metro's 7 lines set a record high of 5.416 million. As of August 27, 2018, Shenzhen Metro trains have maintained an on-time rate of over 99%, and have achieved 4,990 days of safe operation.
