The North Extension of Guangzhou Metro Line 8, a new line serving the Tongdewei area, has made further progress. Yesterday, a reporter learned from Guangzhou Metro that after 16 days and nights of tunneling, the right-line shield machine on the Cultural Park–Tongfuxi section of the Line 8 North Extension successfully crossed beneath the Pearl River. The line is scheduled to be completed and opened by the end of next year.
　　It is understood that the right-line tunnel of the Cultural Park–Tongfuxi section is 699.445 meters long, and part of the tunnel needs to enter the 170-meter construction scope of the Pearl River section, with a tight schedule, high risks and great difficulty. Facing the challenges, Guangzhou Metro organized all participating parties to hold multiple expert review meetings, optimize and review the construction and shield tunneling plans, scientifically prepare emergency plans, improve the ability to respond to and handle emergencies, and ensure the safe and smooth advancement of the shield machine. It is understood that after the right-line section is completed, construction of the left-line section will continue.
　　Guangzhou Metro disclosed that as of now, the civil engineering works of the Line 8 North Extension have been completed 52%. It is reported that the Line 8 North Extension (Cultural Park to Baiyun Lake) is 16.1 kilometers long. The line will have 13 new stations, including 4 interchange stations: it will interchange with Line 1 at Chenjiaci Station, with the future Line 11 and Phase II of Line 13 at Caihongqiao Station, with Line 5 at Xicun Station, and with the future Line 12 at Julong Station.
