Construction machinery can also suffer "heatstroke." Many people may find this hard to believe, but this is neither idle talk nor sensationalism — it is an ironclad fact. People fear heat, and machines fear heat as well, especially older imported or domestic hydraulic excavators with long service lives. Because they are particularly sensitive to temperature, high heat often makes them refuse to move when they should, improve a bit after cooling down, yet see efficiency drop sharply. This is machine "heatstroke." What should be done when a hydraulic excavator "overheats"? Below I discuss several countermeasures.
(1) High-temperature symptoms: Most users report that before a hydraulic excavator "overheats," its starting force and speed are quite normal, but after one or two hours of work, the machine slows down and digging loses power. Sometimes the engine even emits smoke, and if work continues it will stall. It needs to stop and cool down before continuing, and work efficiency drops sharply.
(2) Causes of high temperature: ① Hydraulic excavators are machines with relatively high working intensity in the hydraulic system and must maintain continuous operation under high pressure. If cooling and heat dissipation are insufficient, the machine will experience sustained temperature rise and overheating. ② As machines age, hydraulic components wear and internal leakage gradually increases. Hydraulic oil generates heat under high pressure due to internal leakage, and excessive internal leakage also increases the load on the cooling system, further raising temperatures. ③ As temperature rises, hydraulic oil gradually becomes thinner; viscosity decreases, causing hydraulic components to gradually increase internal leakage and reduce working pressure, resulting in weak operation. ④ As hydraulic components wear, temperature rises and internal leakage increases, the pump control system's function gradually declines, reducing the pump's variable-displacement function and increasing engine load, so the engine cannot work normally or stalls.
(3) Troubleshooting: Based on years of hydraulic excavator maintenance experience, the following measures can be taken for the above symptoms.
① Forced cooling: Some simply install a blower on the machine. High temperature is slightly relieved, but the effect is still not ideal and it does not look good.
② Eliminate internal leakage: Test old mechanical hydraulic parts on a test bench. If hydraulic components have insufficient working pressure, insufficient power, unstable or non-variable displacement, or severe internal leakage, they should be disassembled and inspected to check whether component wear has reached the limit, and then components should be replaced according to specific conditions to alleviate and eliminate internal leakage. For matched parts that are difficult to replace, replacement or modification of the main assembly should be considered.
③ Improve hydraulic heat dissipation: Because increased hydraulic internal leakage increases the cooling load, enhancing the heat dissipation capacity of the cooling system is also a way to lower hydraulic oil temperature.
④ Select high-quality hydraulic oil to reduce temperature rise, lower oil viscosity, and provide other functions.
⑤ Modify imported machines: Over the years, our modifications to various imported hydraulic excavators have achieved obvious results. Using good domestic complete assemblies as replacements not only reduces the procurement cost of imported components but also provides stable and reliable quality. This has now become our company's main business.
Machine "heatstroke" is very common. The hot weather has arrived. Owners using hydraulic machinery, to ensure your machines work smoothly, please be mentally prepared to care for machines suffering "heatstroke" during the high-temperature summer season.
