The huge machine, shaped like a "flood dragon," encountered unavoidable difficulties during transport. Because the shield body was too large and the journey to Chengdu was long, transporting it by flatbed trailer would exceed width, weight and height limits. Faced with these three excesses, it was decided to disassemble the shield body and ship it to Chengdu by water. Due to the limited width of the site, the shield machine was launched in separated sections. Only the main shield machine and the first two trailers could be placed in the shaft; the remaining trailers could only be lowered into the launch shaft after the main machine had tunneled a sufficient distance. At this point, connecting the pipelines between the surface and the shaft became the difficulty of the work. To make it easy to distinguish pipeline types and accurately locate lines in case of faults, the pipelines were classified and arranged on racks. To ensure the quality of cable wiring and prevent interference between lines, the process requirements were particularly precise.
