In October 2017, at the headquarters of BAUER Group in Schrobenhausen, Germany, BAUER Group signed a contract on behalf of Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the leading oil and gas exploration and production company in Oman, to expand the world's largest constructed wetland in Oman. The first phase of the plant was completed in 2011 by BAUER Nimr LLC, a local subsidiary of BAUER Resources GmbH in Oman. The Nimr constructed wetland is a flagship project for the treatment of produced water from crude oil in Oman and has won numerous international awards for its outstanding sustainability, innovation, and safety.
Its innovation is reflected in the fact that the technology primarily uses gravity flow and natural processes to remove large quantities of hydrocarbons from the water. The Nimr wetland is significant in scale, covering an area of 10.5 square kilometers. In addition to its excellent treatment performance, the hydrocarbon content in the water at the wetland outlet can be reduced to below 0.5 ppm, and almost 95% of the crude oil entering the facility can be recovered or removed without the need for additional power or chemicals. After expansion in 2014, the current treatment capacity of the plant has reached 115,000 cubic meters per day. In addition, the desert area where the project is located has been transformed into an animal habitat with more than 140 species, including numerous birds, fish, and reptiles.

The current expansion plan will add a new produced water treatment capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day, bringing the total treatment capacity to 175,000 cubic meters per day. BAUER Nimr LLC will be responsible for the design and construction of the project and will operate it until 2044. The total value of the project exceeds 160 million euros, with construction works accounting for about a quarter of the total. Construction will be completed by the end of 2019, after which BAUER will operate the produced water treatment plant for 25 years.
