Domestic shield tunneling machines have opened another door to a mid-to-high-end market, squeezing into a region long dominated by Japanese brands.

On December 4, 2017, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry signed two contracts for the sale of two 6-meter earth pressure balance shield tunneling machines with Taiwan Ronggong Engineering Co., Ltd. and Taiwan Continental Engineering Corporation respectively.

The four shield tunneling machines will be used in the construction of the CQ850 and CQ850A sections of the Taipei Metro Wanda Line, and the first batch of equipment will be delivered in 2018.

The Taipei Wanda Line is a major transportation artery under construction in Taipei, with geology mainly consisting of silty sand layers and sandy silt layers. During shield tunneling, it is necessary to overcome geological and construction challenges such as a 50-meter ultra-small turning radius, passing beneath the pile foundations of the Shuanghe Bridge, in-situ deviation through the ventilation shaft section, and encountering diaphragm walls along the route.

Taiwanese users believe that compared with Japanese-brand shield tunneling machines, domestic equipment represented by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry can better adapt to the complex geological conditions in areas crossed by the metro.

At present, shield tunneling machines independently developed by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry have held a "half of the market" in the domestic market for four consecutive years. TBMs and large-diameter shield tunneling machines with a market share of more than 85% have become the leading domestic brand. They are widely used in key projects such as metro, railway, and water conservancy projects in more than 30 provinces and cities across China, and have been successfully exported to countries and regions such as Russia and Turkey.

In the past two years, with the gradual advancement of the "Belt and Road" strategy, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry has continuously expanded overseas markets. Having formulated a "two-step" strategy in 2012, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry achieved a transition from "borrowing ships to go to sea" to "driving itself to sea" in 2016. Over the past two years, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry has established 11 branches in Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, India, Russia, Turkey, South Africa, and other countries and regions, comprehensively laying out its overseas market presence.
