On the morning of October 6, the Wuhu Yangtze River Highway Second Bridge was successfully closed, achieving full connectivity. This serves as a tribute to the 68th National Day and the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and lays a solid foundation for the goal of opening to traffic by the end of the year.

Qiao Chuanfu, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Group Company, and Commander of the Wuhu Second Bridge Construction Command, announced the successful closure of the bridge. Pan Zhaohui, Secretary of the Wuhu Municipal Party Committee, and Luo Ning, Inspector of the Provincial Department of Transport, delivered speeches on site, fully affirming the bridge construction and putting forward earnest expectations and clear requirements for the project to open to traffic within the year. They hoped that all parties involved in the project would continue to maintain high morale, do good deeds and achieve success, and strive for the subsequent engineering construction with higher standards and stricter requirements, endeavoring to build a century-old bridge and a reassuring bridge, and making dedicated efforts to accelerate the construction of a beautiful Anhui with the "Five Major Developments." He Maoxie, Mayor of Wuhu, Cao Shaobing, Vice Mayor, Qian Dongsheng, General Manager of the Group Company, Wang Hongxiang, Deputy General Manager, and representatives of all participating parties witnessed the bridge closure on site.

The Wuhu Yangtze River Highway Second Bridge and its approaches are an important part of the "Vertical Two" of the "Four Vertical and Eight Horizontal" expressway network plan of Anhui Province, and a strategic corridor for the province's eastward development. The project starts at Shijian in Wuwei County and ends at Eshan in Fanchang County, with a total route length of 55.5 kilometers. It is constructed to expressway standards with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The main and approach bridges across the river are 14 kilometers long, including a main bridge of 1,622 meters, which is a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 806 meters, two towers, four cable planes, separated and fully floating steel box girders. The cable tower is 262.48 meters high, the tallest tower in the Wanjiang area. The main bridge has a navigable clearance height of 32 meters, which can accommodate 10,000-ton sea-going vessels year-round. The estimated total investment of the project is 9.039 billion yuan, and it is planned to be completed and opened to traffic by the end of this year.

Since the official commencement of the Wuhu Yangtze River Highway Second Bridge in October 2013, the bridge builders have overcome technical difficulties such as deep-water foundation and high tower construction, mass concrete temperature control, and linear precision control of long-span bridges. They have summarized and refined the "Anhui Precision" construction culture brand, overturned people's traditional understanding of cable-stayed bridges, and created "multiple firsts" in the history of cable-stayed bridge construction in China: for the first time, the same-direction rotating cable anchorage technology was used on a long-span bridge, which is a new milestone in the history of cable-stayed bridge construction; the first double-legged column tower on the Yangtze River; the first super-long-span cable-stayed bridge using arc-bottom steel box girders; and the first application of symmetrical cantilever assembly technology for all girder segments, with a maximum cantilever length of 397 meters, setting a new record in domestic cable-stayed bridge construction. These technological innovation achievements have been highly praised by experts at home and abroad. The Wuhu Second Bridge won the International BE Innovation Award and was listed by the Ministry of Transport as a science and technology innovation demonstration project.

The construction site of the Wuhu Yangtze River Highway Second Bridge is exactly the location where the first shot of the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign was fired. The four-cable-plane single-column tower symbolizes the aesthetic theme of "crossing the river" and "voyaging far." After the bridge is completed, it will form the prototype of a 143-kilometer expressway outer ring around Wuhu, setting up the main framework of a modern metropolis and adding wings of takeoff for the regional economy's accumulation and vigorous development.
