According to statistics, as of March 2017, a total of 133 urban rail transit lines in 30 cities across the country had been put into operation, with an operating mileage of 4,152.8 kilometers, an increase of 2,412 kilometers in total operating mileage within five years. As of December 2016, urban rail transit investment in mainland China had reached 384.7 billion yuan, and the total length of lines under construction was 5,636.5 kilometers, both hitting record highs.

In addition, many large cities are stepping up their efforts in rail transit construction, and many second-tier cities are also beginning rail transit construction. Feng Aijun, secretary-general of the Rail Transit Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, said: “At present, 48 cities across the country are building rail transit, 58 cities have received approval for construction projects, and more than 100 cities are in the preliminary planning stage. The scale and speed of construction are leading the world.”
