Military leaders and villagers cheer together as the “poverty alleviation well” completes and water flows.
“Water! Finally water!……” Recently, in the sweltering cornfields of Mahe Village in a mountainous area, dozens of officers and soldiers and local onlookers cheered as groundwater gushed from the drill pipe of an XCMG water well drilling rig. Pi Bo, captain of the well-drilling team from a Rocket Force unit in charge of the site, told reporters that this was a concrete measure by their unit to implement President Xi’s important instruction on “targeted poverty alleviation” and participate in the local battle against poverty.
It is understood that Mahe Village is located in a dry, hilly area with poor transportation. The village covers an area of 18.9 square kilometers and has 22 villager groups, 591 households, and a total population of 2,350, including 193 impoverished households with 823 people, accounting for 35 percent of the total population. Because of the barren land, poor natural conditions, and distinct dry and wet seasons, local villagers have long suffered from water shortages. Crops cannot retain soil moisture due to lack of irrigation, and even drinking water for people and livestock is often difficult to guarantee.
After learning of the situation, the unit sent personnel to visit, investigate, and conduct on-site surveys, planning to drill one water well for the village to ease the villagers’ urgent need. After determining the drilling location, they immediately dispatched a well-drilling team to the village to carry out drilling operations. After a month of intensive work, the well finally produced water and was completed.
“Thank the government, thank the people’s soldiers!” said villager Li, an onlooker, with emotion. The recent drought had left him at a loss, and now is the critical period for corn filling. With this “poverty alleviation well,” not only has the problem of domestic water use been solved, but the crops can also “drink” this “life-saving water”!
The equipment used for this project was the XCMG XSC8/400 water well drilling rig, with a lifting force of up to 40t and torque of up to 13,400Nm. Its main technical indicators have reached the international advanced level.
