Following the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China's second railway to Tibet——the Sichuan-Tibet Railway——is under construction. The construction of this railway can be described as another mega-project in China's infrastructure development. While bringing project opportunities to the infrastructure industry and the construction machinery sector, especially the piling machinery industry, it also plays an important role in rationally laying out China's railway trunk lines, promoting the sustainable development of the construction industry and construction machinery manufacturing, and advancing the implementation of national development strategies. The start of construction on this railway has attracted widespread attention from domestic and foreign media. Why has the Sichuan-Tibet Railway become the focus of world attention? The author believes there are mainly two reasons.

First, the project is extraordinarily difficult, another "road to heaven" on the "Roof of the World." According to experts, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway rises and falls eight times, with the highest point at an altitude of 4,400 meters. Different terrains, mudslides and earthquakes are also huge threats. The construction and building of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway line must overcome the greatest risks in the world, making it the most difficult mega-project in the history of railway construction. Indeed, construction has already begun on the railway sections at both ends of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, located in Chengdu, Sichuan and Lhasa, Tibet. Feasibility studies for other railway sections have also been completed, but the most difficult section, which must cross the towering mountains of Kangding in Sichuan to reach Nyingchi in Tibet, is still being designed. After construction begins, it may take seven years to complete. Once completed, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway will reach a total length of 1,700 kilometers, with bridges and tunnels accounting for 80%, and an investment budget of 250 billion yuan. Travel time from Chengdu to Lhasa will also be reduced from 48 hours to 13 hours. The entire project may take nearly ten years to complete. Faced with the most difficult, longest-duration and most expensive project, it can truly be called "ten years to sharpen a sword."

Second, it will help overcome transportation bottlenecks and accelerate Tibet's development. The relatively backward transportation facilities in the Tibet Autonomous Region have severely constrained the economic and social development of the region, making it one of China's major poverty-stricken areas. With the implementation of the Western Development Strategy, the volume of materials transported to Tibet has increased substantially. Tibet's existing transportation channels, whether in terms of capacity and volume or in terms of speed and convenience, fall far short of the urgent requirements of economic development. Therefore, building the Sichuan-Tibet Railway is an objective necessity for overcoming the current transportation "bottleneck," strengthening ties between Tibet and the interior, accelerating the economic development of Sichuan and Tibet, and advancing the Western Development Strategy. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway runs through Sichuan and Tibet and is a major corridor connecting the two provinces and regions with the interior. It is also an important component of the road network framework in the western hinterland and a backbone railway for future intra-regional road network construction. At the same time, the completion and opening of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway will create a three-dimensional transportation system of "rail, road and air." It is of major strategic significance for developing the rich resources and tourism of Sichuan and Tibet, strengthening ethnic unity and cultural exchange, fundamentally protecting the ecological environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, further strengthening border defense construction, and completely changing the situation of "difficulty in entering Tibet."

The start of construction on the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has attracted widespread attention precisely because of the railway's extraordinary difficulty and importance on a global scale. Its difficulty presents Chinese engineering builders with severe tests in survey, design and construction at ultra-high altitude, over an ultra-long construction period and with ultra-high difficulty, testing and bearing witness to the style of Chinese builders' world-class mastery in building a world-class project. Its importance lies in the fact that the construction of this railway will make important contributions to improving the economic structure, deepening ethnic exchange, supporting Tibet's development, advancing the Western Development Strategy, and ultimately achieving the strategy of balanced and coordinated development between east and west. By then, this stunning masterpiece of "ten years to sharpen a sword" will make the world look up in admiration and amazement!
