Made in China Is the Foundation of a Prosperous Nation; Overtaking South Korea and Japan Is Only a Matter of Time

The National Bureau of Statistics and the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing jointly released data on the 1st: in February, China's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 51.6%, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous month, remaining above 50% for seven consecutive months and continuing a stable, improving trend. Some experts analyze that the PMI remaining above the boom-or-bust line for seven consecutive months indicates that the trend of stabilizing economic growth is now relatively clear.

Shi Shusi, commentator for China Economic Net, said on the program "My Finance": Two P's are particularly important. One is PMI, which mainly reflects manufacturing, that is, the real economy. In recent years, due to structural adjustment and industrial upgrading, the real economy has faced enormous challenges and lower returns on investment, so it has become "unloved by grandma and unwanted by uncle," and a trend has emerged of capital shifting from the real economy to the virtual economy. However, judging from China's position in the global industrial chain, the inherent demands of our economy under the new normal, and the solid foundation formed by our strong manufacturing sector, manufacturing remains the foundation of the nation's economic revitalization. Strengthening manufacturing and revitalizing the nation through industry will not become outdated for a considerable period of time.

The second P is PPI. PPI turned from negative growth to positive growth starting in September 2016, after 54 consecutive months of negative growth. Happiness does not fall from the sky; roll up your sleeves and work hard. So for the economy, this means tackling hard problems in the real economy, laying a solid foundation, and using new technology platforms, artificial intelligence, the new globalization environment, and the new trade environment to achieve stable and rapid economic growth. This may be the future; there are many most important links now in strengthening weak areas, and in fact, through cost reduction and the "three deletions," the most important thing is also to further solidify the Chinese economy and, on a solid foundation, use new technologies and the new trade environment to make it strong.

What these data show now is, first, that we have a good foundation, namely that the shift from the real economy to the virtual economy has been reversed to some extent. Second, on this foundation, there is still a long way to go to achieve our economic takeoff. Many policies still need further improvement, especially in finance and the capital market; many short-sighted and quick-profit-seeking things need adjustment. This is a systematic project. Many people say that if the real economy does not make money, how can it be done? In fact, there is no real economy that does not make money; the question is how the real economy, in the wave of consumption change and the wave of industrial change, can grasp deep consumer demand. "Where is the way out for Made in China? If we cannot compete in high-end and sophisticated products, and the low end has been mostly seized by our Southeast Asian friends, labor costs have risen and cannot be lowered, but after all we have strong manufacturing capacity, and our breakthroughs in applied technology are the most numerous in the world. Under this premise, making Chinese manufacturing both cheap and good and beating South Korea and Japan is the most realistic task. Go, real economy; go, Made in China," said Shi Shusi.
