When talking about BIM master craftsmen at the Shanghai Branch of China Construction Fifth Engineering Division Installation Company, people will certainly mention Xiong Jian and He Wei. Both are important supports for the company's deepened BIM design, but compared to Xiong Jian's high research output, He Wei is a powerful mobile force. Regarding the company's arrangements, He Wei always goes wherever needed, without complaint, and missions are always accomplished. In 2016, he successively led and assisted in the deepened BIM design work for the CSSC project, the Jiangsu Jurong Hospital project, and the Senlan Waigaoqiao project, effectively ensuring the normal operation of the preliminary technical research and development work for each project.

He Wei joined the company in 2008 and has successively experienced the X3, Wuxi Henglong, SOHO Bund, CSSC 2E5-1, Jiangsu Jurong Hospital, and Senlan Waigaoqiao projects. He is currently the chief engineer of the Senlan Waigaoqiao project. This year, he won the third prize of the Shanghai "Shenxin Cup", and his project won the third prize of the 3rd "Shenxin Cup" BIM Mechanical and Electrical Installation Application Innovation Competition and the Innovation Cup Application Award. At the same time, he actively participated in promoting BIM application in the Senlan Waigaoqiao project, trained BIM deepened design personnel, and cultivated 6 new BIM personnel, strongly supporting other newly started projects. He also organized personnel to participate in various competitions. Project employees Zheng Xiaolu won the first prize and Wang Jianling won the second prize in the company's "Everyone on Stage" event.

Love to ponder, learn BIM technology with questions

He Wei first came into contact with BIM technology at the Henglong project in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, and participated in the preliminary deepened BIM design work of this project.

Everything is difficult at the beginning. Although He Wei was a layman in BIM technology at the time, he is a person who loves to ponder and has his own views on the application of BIM technology. He believes that doing a good job in BIM construction in the pre-construction stage of the project is equivalent to doing a simulated construction, so that problems encountered on the construction site can be discovered and solved in advance. At the same time, after the model is completed, it can be used as the basis for material planning during the construction stage, making the on-site quota material requisition work more accurate. In addition, because he happened to be doing quantity calculation work before the bidding of this project, he had a certain understanding of the cost and profit creation points of this project, which facilitated his targeted application of BIM technology. In this way, learning technology with questions quickly made him the backbone of the project's BIM deepened design.

The habit of pondering is not only in learning technology. He often thinks about how to create benefits for the project from the reasonable optimization of construction drawings, the scientific allocation of on-site labor, the innovation and reform of construction techniques, and the scientific management and distribution of engineering materials. It is this habit that makes him learn things very quickly and grow quickly. In July 2013, he began to serve as the chief engineer of the SOHO Bund project, responsible for the project's deepened design work.

Hard work pays off. The owner of the SOHO Bund project is very picky and strives for perfection in construction quality. He Wei led everyone to go all out and successfully completed the drawing deepening work. The SOHO project finally won the LEED Gold Award, and the BIM achievement in the process, "Comprehensive Application of BIM Technology in the Bund SOHO Project", made a major breakthrough.

Obey arrangements, available whenever needed

As BIM technology is widely used in the construction industry, the company's major owners' demand for BIM technology is also increasing. As a large number of the company's mature BIM talents have been transferred to other regions of the installation company, mature deepened design talents are suddenly in short supply. Therefore, under the company's arrangement, He Wei has repeatedly assisted major projects in completing deepened BIM design work. Regarding the company's arrangements, He Wei is always available on call and never complains.

In February 2015, He Wei had just finished work on the SOHO project and immediately rushed to the Shanghai CSSC project to serve as chief engineer. At that time, the CSSC project was in a stage of rushing the construction schedule, and there was considerable pressure in drawing submission for approval and technical tackling. In the second half of that year, the company won the bid for the Jiangsu Jurong Hospital project, and the owner required BIM experts for deepened design, so the company transferred He Wei to serve as chief engineer; in March 2016, the company won the bid for the Waigaoqiao Senlan project. He Wei had just finished work on the Jiangsu Jurong Hospital project and immediately rushed to the new project to complete the deepened design work. Not only that, during this year, he also continued to assist the CSSC project in drawing submission for approval and other engineering technical work, contributing to the smooth completion of the project. 

Build a platform, cultivate BIM talents and improve quality

Senlan Waigaoqiao is a project obtained by the company in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, and it is also the first project cooperated with China Merchants Property and Waigaoqiao Co., Ltd. The owner attaches great importance to the preliminary drawing deepening BIM design of the project, and the company also formed a deepened BIM design team with He Wei as the main force.

After He Wei arrived, he immediately arranged for personnel from various disciplines to carry out drawing work. Some members of the project's deepened BIM design team were not yet good enough in experience and technology. He Wei specially took advantage of the BIM training opportunities of the installation company and the Shanghai branch to organize labor competition activities, promoting learning through practice and improving their level. The design center of the installation company and the project management department of the Shanghai branch also organized BIM training and briefings accordingly. He Wei also specially gave employees extra tutoring to improve their BIM level.

Where there is cultivation, there is harvest. Under He Wei's training and arrangement, 6 employees became BIM technical talents. The HVAC discipline was led by HVAC supervisor Wang Jianling, with Ye Zhe and Guo Taiping starting preparations, arranging layouts according to on-site requirements and technical specifications, and providing the most detailed markings for later on-site installation as much as possible. The electrical discipline was led by electrical supervisor Li Xianghuang, with Sun Fengming and Xing Taopeng cooperating, grasping the direction and size of each cable tray, and reflecting the cable layout of each area in detail in BIM, using the clearest drawings to reflect the most real site. The water discipline was led by Li Long and Jiang Xingguo. The water discipline can be said to be a more tedious part of the three disciplines in drawing, with many water pipe distributions, many valve positions, and many avoidance positions. When arranging each water pipe, in addition to considering the position and elevation, the subsequent installation and maintenance must also be considered. To complete the BIM layout, the two almost had to spend double the time calculating and modifying.

As time went by, one exquisite BIM drawing after another appeared in front of the owner. In one month, the BIM team completed the entire basement from modeling to drawing output by working overtime, and received high praise from the owner.

In addition, he also encouraged project employees to participate in the company's "Everyone on Stage" activity and helped project contestants rehearse before the competition. Finally, Zheng Xiaolu won the first prize and Wang Jianling won the second prize in the company's "Everyone on Stage" event.

Looking back on nine years, time flies like a white horse passing through a gap. In these unforgettable nine years, He Wei grew from an ordinary technician in the company to a project chief engineer. For eight years, he has consistently adhered to the promotion and application of BIM technology, never forgetting his original intention, without regrets, step by step, neither elated by favor nor discouraged by disgrace, calm as before. This should be a true portrayal of an excellent installation person and a role model for future generations. Facing the future, He Wei will continue to lead BIM technical elites, overcome obstacles, and carry forward the promotion and application of BIM technology, creating more value for the company's sustainable development.
