This morning (28th), construction of Changsha Metro Line 6 (Wenchangge to Dongtundu Underground Supporting Project) commenced, marking that Phase I of Line 6 has officially entered the substantive construction stage. Changsha Metro has achieved the goal of "starting one line and completing one line each year".

Line 6 is an east-west trunk line in the Changsha rail transit network. Together with Metro Lines 1 to 5, it forms a network skeleton of a "star-shaped framework with double cross supports". Line 6 mainly runs along Dongfanghong Road, Tongzipo Road, Xiangya Road and Renmin Road, all the way to Huanghua Airport. The line is about 48 km long with 34 underground stations, including 13 transfer stations, which will interchange with Metro Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Intercity Railway, the Changsha Maglev Express and other rail transit lines. Unlike the B-type trains used on the previous five lines, Line 6 will adopt six-car A-type trains, increasing passenger capacity by more than 20%. The estimated total investment for the Line 6 project is about 37.5 billion yuan (including 480 million yuan for the reserved Yazi Pu tunnel project).

Line 6 is divided into two phases and implemented in three sections: central, east and west. The central section [Fenglin Road Station to Dongsi Line Station] is Phase I, with a length of 30.46 km and 23 stations. Construction started at the end of 2016 and trial operation is planned for 2021. The west section [Wutong Road Station to Fenglin Road Station (exclusive)] and the east section [Dongsi Line Station (exclusive) to Xihang Station Area Station] are Phase II. The west section is 5.5 km long with 4 stations, and the east section is 12.02 km long with 7 stations. The east and west sections are planned to start construction in 2018 and begin trial operation in 2022. The Furong Middle Road Station, which started construction today, is located next to Fuxing World Financial Center and belongs to Phase I.
As the sixth metro line to start construction in Changsha, Line 6 has nine major features and highlights: First, it is the line with the longest length, most transfer stations, largest span and widest coverage. Line 6 is the longest line in the Changsha Metro network plan, with a total length of about 48 km. It has the most transfer stations, with as many as 13 rail transit interchanges. Line 6 starts from the second phase of Meixi Lake in the west, passes through Xiangjiang New Area, High-tech Zone, Yuelu District, Kaifu District, Furong District, Yuhua District, Changsha County and the Economic Development Zone, and ends at Huanghua Airport in the east. It is the line with the largest span and widest coverage. Second, it is the first line to use A-type trains. Line 6 is the first line in Changsha Metro to adopt A-type trains, offering greater passenger capacity and a more comfortable ride than previous lines. Third, it is the first line planned to operate under the PPP model. Part B of Line 6 is planned to be operated under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It is the first such line in the Changsha rail transit network plan and will provide a demonstration for subsequent rail transit PPP construction projects. Fourth, it is the first line planned to be built under the "TOD" concept (transit-oriented development). To fully leverage the economic and social benefits of rail transit and respond to the government's requirement that "building rail transit is building the city", Line 6 is planned to be built with the concept of combining metro construction with property development around stations. Fifth, it is the only line connecting the airport and directly reaching the terminal. Line 6 connects the Hexi sub-center, passes through the main city center and directly reaches Huanghua International Airport. It is also the only metro line connecting the airport and directly reaching the terminal. Sixth, it is the only line connecting major provincial and municipal institutions and key hospitals. It not only passes through major institutions such as the Provincial Party Committee, the former Provincial Government, the Provincial CPPCC, the Provincial United Front Work Department and Xinhua News Agency, as well as key sites such as Martyrs Park and the Provincial Museum, but also connects key provincial and municipal hospitals such as the School of Medicine of Central South University, Xiangya Hospital, the Second Xiangya Hospital, the Third Xiangya Hospital, Hunan Provincial Tumor Hospital and Wangwang Hospital. Seventh, it is a line implementing the "quality metro" concept. Line 6 adheres to the concept of building a "quality metro" and innovatively proposes a plan to jointly build some station auxiliary structures with surrounding buildings. After joint construction, station entrances and ventilation pavilions are contained within the buildings, which not only solves the land occupation impact but also addresses mutual interference, while beautifying the environment and achieving a win-win-win for the metro, the land parcels and the environment. Eighth, it is a line implementing the "humanistic metro" concept. Line 6 adheres to the concept of building a "humanistic metro", aiming to improve operational service levels. First, it enhances the public space in stations, maintaining a good visual space while improving ride comfort. Second, under normal circumstances, metro entrances are equipped with up and down escalators, and each station has two entrances with barrier-free elevators. Ninth, it is a line implementing the "green metro" concept. Line 6 adheres to the concept of building a "green metro" and considers the importance of tree relocation and environmental protection at the preliminary design stage. Tree relocation follows the six-character principle of "roads give way to trees, trees give way to stations", minimizing the number of trees relocated and the impact on trees. At the same time, the line and station locations fully consider the travel convenience of residents along the route, and through strengthened safety measures, vibration-damping track beds and other means, minimize the impact on the ground environment, achieving the goal of "conveniencing citizens without disturbing them".
