On December 21, the Nanjing Municipal Transport Bureau publicly announced the completion status of its 2016 practical projects for residents. The highly anticipated four major congestion relief projects in Nanjing—covering the east, south, west, and north of the city and including the Central North Road reconstruction, the northern extension of Dongqi Road, the western extension of Shui Ximen Street, and the continued construction of the northern section of the Second Airport Corridor—will be fully launched by the end of this year.
Congestion has long been a pain point for urban travel. Among the four major congestion relief projects launched within the year, the railway culvert on Central North Road in the north of the city will be widened to a road width of 55 meters with eight lanes in both directions, improving traffic capacity in the area. The northern extension of Dongqi Road in the east of the city will open a rapid passage between Jiangning and Xianlin; in the future, driving from Dongshan to Xianlin will take only about ten minutes. The western extension of Shui Ximen Street in the west of the city will connect the section from Yanshan Road to Qingjiang South Road, further enriching the road network structure in the area. The northern section of the Second Airport Corridor in the south of the city will effectively share the traffic flow between Jiangning and the main city via the Kazimen Interchange. The Tiexinqiao Interchange, which is jammed during morning and evening peaks, has now entered pile foundation construction. After the renovation is completed, vehicles entering the Ring Expressway from Andemen Street from north to south will be diverted; vehicles heading to the Third Yangtze River Bridge will move west to the parallel Fengning Road to access the Ring Expressway, and vehicles coming from the direction of the Second Yangtze River Bridge and exiting the Ring Expressway will use the Dengfu Road exit.
In public travel, which residents care about, Nanjing has currently built 1,699 public bicycle stations equipped with more than 54,000 bicycles, with usage exceeding 200,000 person-times per day. Through Baidu Maps, users can check in real time the real-time status of city buses as well as the number of available bicycles and empty docks at public bicycle stations. In addition, the main structures of all 18 stations and all 20 shield tunnels of the Nanjing–Hexian Intercity Railway have been completed. The civil engineering main structures of the five stations of Phase II of the Nanjing–Gaochun Intercity Railway have basically been completed. Metro Line 4 has been completed and is undergoing testing; it will be put into operation next year.
