On November 3, the reporter learned from Nanchang Xingfu Canal Water Area Treatment Co., Ltd. that the archway for the utility tunnel project of the Luoyang East Road Comprehensive Reconstruction Project (from Changdong Avenue to Tianxiang Avenue) has been completed, marking the imminent start of construction. This project is Nanchang's first underground utility tunnel, starting from Changdong Avenue in the west and ending at Tianxiang Avenue in the east, with a total length of 3,659 meters and an estimated investment of about 420 million yuan.

According to reports, the construction of the Luoyang East Road utility tunnel project includes 13 parts: main utility tunnel, branch utility tunnel, service connection utility tunnel, main auxiliary structures, lighting engineering, power engineering, cable tray, drainage engineering, gas fire suppression, mechanical exhaust, fire alarm, equipment monitoring, and management center, with a design service life of 100 years. In addition, the tunnel also has functions such as fire prevention, waterproofing, explosion prevention, and earthquake disaster reduction, and its basic seismic fortification intensity can reach VI degrees.
Regarding the reason for choosing the section from Changdong Avenue to Tianxiang Avenue on Luoyang East Road for the utility tunnel, Yu Jiangrong, director of the Municipal Affairs Division of Nanchang Xingfu Canal Water Area Treatment Co., Ltd., said that this section is currently a dead-end road, and Nanchang had previously planned to open it up so that Luoyang Road and Shunwai Road could extend eastward to the Provincial Olympic Sports Center. "Taking this renovation opportunity, Nanchang chose to implement the underground utility tunnel construction simultaneously, which can avoid excavation of existing roads and reduce construction difficulty."
As for the size of the tunnel, Yu Jiangrong described it as "able to accommodate three or four cars driving side by side." He introduced that the standard cross-section of the tunnel adopts a rectangular form, divided into one chamber with four compartments, and the overall standard cross-section dimensions are 10.85 meters wide and 3.45 meters high. The standard cross-section dimensions of the four compartments are: power compartment 2.7 meters wide and 2.85 meters high, comprehensive compartment 3.1 meters wide and 2.85 meters high, gas compartment 1.7 meters wide and 2.85 meters high, and sewage compartment 2.0 meters wide and 2.85 meters high. "It is worth mentioning that traditional underground sewage pipes are only about 50 centimeters in diameter, which are easily blocked and difficult to clean. With the sewage compartment in the future, workers can directly enter the tunnel for cleaning."
Currently, the Luoyang East Road underground utility tunnel is undergoing construction bidding. According to the plan, the project will start construction by mid-December at the latest, with a total construction period of 36 months. "The completion of the underground utility tunnel can avoid repeated road excavation caused by pipeline maintenance. After the pipelines along the route are integrated into the tunnel, the urban landscape will also be improved. More importantly, as the first utility tunnel to be built, it plays a very important foundational role in the formation of the skeleton and network of Nanchang's underground utility tunnels," said Yu Jiangrong.
It is understood that Nanchang has proposed to set up utility tunnels under 22 main and secondary roads in the urban area, involving a total road length of about 101.8 kilometers and a total investment of 4.04 billion yuan, integrating power cables, communication cables, etc., to effectively solve the problem of fragmented underground pipelines. At present, in addition to Luoyang East Road, the underground utility tunnel on Qingshan North Road is also in the preparatory work stage.
