Green development has always been a theme advocated by the country. So what are the roles and value of BIM in green construction? Mainly in the following aspects.
Achieve information sharing throughout the building lifecycle. With the development of information technology today, in the various stages of engineering design, construction, and operation and maintenance, as well as in each specialty and each link of each stage, application software is used to assist professional work. Practitioners in fields such as design and construction face two main problems: one is information sharing, and the other is collaborative work. The problems of untimely and inaccurate information application and exchange in design, construction, and operation and maintenance have caused a large amount of waste of manpower and material resources and the generation of risks. McGraw Hill of the United States published a research report on interoperability issues in the construction industry, "Interoperability in the Construction Industry". The statistical data in the report show that insufficient data interoperability increases the cost of construction projects by an average of 3.1% and delays the construction period by 3.3%. One of the basic functions of BIM is to strongly support the full sharing and lossless transfer of building project information in the entire process of planning, design, construction, and operation and maintenance, thereby enabling effective management throughout the building lifecycle. The application of BIM technology can enable all participants in a building project (including government authorities, owners, design teams, construction units, building operation departments, etc.) to operate information in models and operate models in information throughout the entire lifecycle of the project from concept generation to complete demolition, and to carry out collaborative work. Unlike the past, where blueprints expressed in symbols and text were relied upon for project construction and operation management, the efficiency of information sharing was very low, making fine management difficult.
An effective tool for achieving sustainable design. BIM technology strongly supports the analysis and simulation of building safety, aesthetics, comfort, economy, as well as energy saving, water saving, land saving, material saving, and environmental protection, thereby making it easy to achieve all-round predictability and controllability throughout the building lifecycle. For example, using BIM technology, design results can be automatically read into building energy efficiency analysis software for energy consumption analysis, or read into virtual construction software for virtual construction, unlike the current situation where technicians need to spend great effort to first establish a building model in energy efficiency analysis software or construction simulation software; for another example, using BIM technology, not only can design results be displayed intuitively, but construction details can also be displayed intuitively, and the construction process can also be simulated to reflect contingencies in the actual process and increase the controllability of the construction process.
Promote changes in the production mode of the construction industry. BIM technology strongly supports the integration of design and construction, reducing the occurrence of "errors, omissions, gaps, and clashes" in construction projects, thereby reducing waste throughout the building lifecycle and bringing huge economic and social benefits. The British Airports Authority used BIM technology to cut the construction cost of Heathrow Terminal 5 by 10%. The CIFE Center at Stanford University summarized the following advantages of using BIM technology based on 32 projects: eliminating 40% of out-of-budget changes; controlling cost estimates within 3% accuracy; shortening the time spent on cost estimation by 80%; reducing contract prices by 10% by discovering and resolving conflicts; shortening project duration by 7%, achieving early return on investment. Henderson Beijing World Financial Center discovered 7,753 conflicts in construction drawings through the application of BIM technology. If these conflicts had only been discovered during construction, it is estimated that they would not only cause more than 10 million yuan in waste and a 3-month delay in the project, but also greatly affect the quality of the project and the developer's brand.
Promote the industrialization of the construction industry. Compared with developed countries, China's construction level has a large gap, mainly due to the low level of building industrialization. The production efficiency and quality of the manufacturing industry have developed by leaps and bounds in the past half century, and production costs have been greatly reduced. One very important factor is the popularization and application of PDM (Product Data Management) technology with 3D design as the core. Construction projects are essentially products of the combination of industrial manufacturing and on-site construction and installation. Increasing the proportion of industrial manufacturing in construction projects is the development direction and goal of the industrialization of the construction industry. Industrialized construction must go through at least the main links of design and drawing, factory manufacturing, transportation and storage, and on-site assembly. Problems in any one of these links will lead to delays and cost increases, for example: inaccurate drawings make on-site assembly impossible, and components that need to be assembled do not arrive at the site in time. BIM technology not only solves the problems of information creation, management, and transmission for the industrialization of the construction industry, but also provides technical support for the popularization of industrialized construction through means such as BIM 3D models, assembly simulation, and full-process tracking of procurement, manufacturing, transportation, storage, and installation. At the same time, industrialization also lays the foundation for automated production and processing. Automation can not only improve product quality and efficiency, but also, for complex steel structures, by using the automatic integration of BIM model data and CNC machine tools, complete cutting work that is difficult to accomplish through the traditional "2D drawings - detailed drawings - processing and manufacturing" process. The industrial application of BIM technology will greatly promote and accelerate the industrialization process of the construction industry.
Closely link the construction industry chain. The industry chain of construction projects includes owners, survey, design, construction, project management, supervision, components, materials, equipment, etc. Generally, a project has dozens of participants, and a large project can have hundreds or even more participants. Two-dimensional drawings, as the carrier for transmitting and communicating information among members of the industry chain, have been used for hundreds of years, and their drawbacks have become increasingly obvious with the increasing complexity of projects and market competition. A key technology for opening up the industry chain is information sharing, and BIM is the result of exploration by experts and colleagues in the global construction industry to solve the above challenges. The owner is the owner of the construction project, and therefore naturally the owner of the project's BIM process and model. Design and construction are the main participants, contributors, and users of BIM. If the owner wants to establish a complete BIM model that can be used for operation, equipment and material suppliers must participate. Suppliers are gradually improving the currently provided 2D drawing materials into providing BIM models of equipment for direct use by owners, designers, and constructors. On the one hand, this promotes the work efficiency and quality of these three parties, and on the other hand, it also provides more and better ways and channels for the sales of suppliers' own products.
