On July 5, the Sino-UK BIM Strategic Management Advanced Forum was held at Wuhan University of Technology. Experts at the forum believe that promoting BIM technology application is not only a new concept for construction industry informatization but also a practical need for industry development; however, there is a shortage of corresponding talent and urgent need for vigorous training.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) refers to building information modeling, which uses various relevant information data of construction projects as the basis of the model to establish building models and simulate the real information of buildings through digital information simulation. BIM technology is shared and transmitted throughout the entire life cycle of project planning, operation, and maintenance, enabling engineering technicians to correctly understand and efficiently respond to various building information, providing a basis for collaborative work for design teams and various construction entities, and playing an important role in improving project production efficiency, enhancing building quality, shortening construction periods, and reducing construction costs.

Dr. Guo Shuting, deputy director of the National BIM Building Manager Evaluation and Management Center of the China Professional Talent Pool, introduced that a UK government survey found that applying BIM technology can reduce construction costs by 33%, save construction time by 50%, and reduce carbon emissions by 50%. Therefore, it requires that government-invested projects must reach BIM Level 2 starting from 2016. The US General Services Administration requires all large projects to adopt 3D-4D-BIM technology.

Industry insiders point out that because BIM technology covers the entire cycle of project planning, design, construction, and operation and maintenance, most owners currently find it difficult to adapt. There is a severe shortage of talent in China who fully master BIM technology. Wang Qiankun, vice president of Wuhan University of Technology, said that promoting BIM technology application has an immeasurable role in technological innovation for construction enterprises and a completely revolutionary impact on current project management methods. BIM is gradually changing from a recommended technology to a mandatory standard; this is an information revolution in the construction field, and construction enterprises that do not master BIM technology will be eliminated by the industry.
