During the
“9th National Congress” of the China Association for Science and Technology, the first “
National Outstanding Science and Technology Talent” Award was presented in Beijing. As the
oldest scientist among the 10 awardees, He Manchao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Vice President of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, and Chairman of the Chinese National Group, said, “Receiving this honor at the age of 60 is both an encouragement and a new beginning for me. I hope my future research can bring a spring of science and technology to the winter of the coal industry.”
Biography
He Manchao, male, born in May 1956 in Lingbao City, Henan Province. Member of the Communist Party of China. Expert in mining engineering rock mechanics. Graduated from Changchun College of Geology with a major in engineering geology in 1981 and obtained a master's degree from the same college in 1985; received a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from the Beijing Graduate School of China University of Mining and Technology in 1989; received an honorary doctorate from the University of Mons, Belgium in 2011. Currently serves as Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering at China University of Mining and Technology.
He is Vice President of the 6th and 7th Councils of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Chairman of the Soft Rock Engineering and Deep Control Branch of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Vice President of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, Chairman of the Chinese National Group of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, Vice Chairman of the Soft Rock Technical Committee of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, and Chairman of the International Rock Mechanics Education Fund Committee.
He is the Chief Scientist of a major project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (50490270) and the Chief Scientist of a National 973 Program project (2006CB202200), and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (1998). Elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013.
Professor He Manchao has long been deeply involved in the front line of mine production, dedicated to the research and practice of theories and technologies for controlling large deformation disasters in mining engineering rock masses, and has achieved systematic and creative results. In the study of the mechanisms of large deformation in mining engineering rock masses, from a control perspective, he proposed the concepts and classification of “gradual” and “sudden” large deformation disasters; revealed the laws of softening large deformation, strength attenuation, and adsorbed gas emission caused by high-temperature and high-humidity underground environments; and for the first time reproduced the entire process of rockburst in the laboratory, concluding that rockburst intensity is determined by the compressive elastic energy of high-stress rock masses and that rockburst modes are controlled by the occurrence of structural planes.
