Recently, as the boom of a QY200 truck crane rose slowly, workers from China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, responsible for the construction of the Qingdao New Airport terminal, steadily lowered the airport's first steel pipe column—5.7 meters tall and weighing 20 tons—onto the embedded anchor bolts of the pile cap at the southwest corner of the terminal hall. With this, the first steel pipe column of the Qingdao New Airport terminal was successfully hoisted into place, and the main construction of the new airport is now in full swing.

Steel Usage Comparable to the "Bird's Nest"
It is reported that the total steel structure of the main terminal hall of the Qingdao New Airport, undertaken by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, uses about 20,000 tons of steel, equivalent to the total steel usage of the Olympic "Bird's Nest." This includes a total of 82 steel pipe columns, with a maximum diameter of 2.3 m and a maximum plate thickness of 55 mm; the steel pipe column works amount to about 5,200 tons. The elevation of the steel columns rises from the perimeter toward the center of the hall, changing linearly from 18.35 m at the periphery to 36.15 m at the center, supporting the entire stainless steel metal roof, whose highest point is at an elevation of 42.15 m.
New Airport Terminal Fully Under Construction
Lu Ning, project manager of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, told reporters that the terminal project is large in scale and highly difficult. "The construction of the terminal hall is relatively difficult; the pile foundation works alone include more than 1,400 hand-dug piles and more than 300 mechanical piles, with the deepest mechanical piles reaching 30 meters. The terminal is designed with an east-west permanent deformation joint, and the largest single block covers an area of 47,000 square meters (438 meters east-west and 225 meters north-south, equivalent to 13.8 standard football fields). It is a typical super-long concrete structure, and targeted measures must be taken in material design, construction, and other stages to prevent harmful cracks in the super-long concrete structure."
