Rendering of Chongqing Raffles City
Chongqing Raffles City is located at Chaotianmen, where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, and is also known as Chongqing's "Sails of Chaotian". It is designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie and invested in by Singapore's CapitaLand Group, making it the largest Singaporean investment project in China to date. The project consists of eight super high-rise towers and a six-story commercial podium, forming a large urban complex integrating residences, offices, shopping malls, serviced apartments, hotels, and dining clubs.
It integrates various public transport facilities for land and water transport, with an underground elevated bridge, light rail station, bus interchange, port terminal, and visitor center. The design draws on Chongqing's millennium-old shipping culture, with towers of 350 meters and 250 meters shaped like strong sails on the river. A 300-meter crystal corridor bridge, symbolizing Chongqing's "stairway" landscape, connects four towers and brings together hotels, shopping, and leisure centers in spacious public spaces at the 60th floor, 250 meters above ground, appearing at night like a brilliant glazed brocade ribbon over the Chaotian waters.
It is understood that Section B of the project consists of the podium, four towers, an elevated bridge, a light rail station, a port terminal, and a bus station, including three underground floors and a six-story podium. Tower T3N has 74 above-ground floors and a building height of 350 meters. Towers T1, T2, and T3S range from 40 to 47 floors and are about 250 meters tall, integrating a transport hub, Grade A offices, high-end residences, retail, rooftop gardens, and various supporting services. Once completed, it will firmly rank as Chongqing's tallest building and a new landmark in Southwest China.
According to a person in charge of the project, since entering the site and starting construction on May 1, 2015, the pile foundation work has been basically completed. The pile foundation bore size reached 6 meters (expanded base diameter 11 meters), making it the largest pile foundation in Southwest China, while ordinary pile foundations are only 1 meter. The podium works are 40% complete, with part of it topped out. It is expected that by the end of this year the podium (six stories, about 30-plus meters high) will be fully topped out.
It is reported that Chongqing Raffles City, located at the confluence of the two rivers, started construction during the flood season, when the perennial flood level is 185.0 meters, far above the 182.0-meter working level on site.
As soon as construction began, the project faced its first "major test". Facing the approaching main flood season, complex underground rock strata, a cramped construction site, pit-in-pit working conditions, and extremely strict technical requirements, with no favorable timing or geographical advantages, the project team met and exchanged views every day, pooled ideas, worked on site, insisted on pre-shift briefings, broke down target management, strictly controlled construction progress, and raced against time to ensure completion of the tower pile foundation work before the flood season.
In the end, with a rigorous and meticulous professional spirit, the young project team, after more than 110 days and nights, finally completed construction of the 262 engineering piles within the limited working area before the main flood season arrived in August, and all piles passed acceptance at once and were all rated Class I piles.
At the end of 2015, the project reached its most critical and difficult construction milestone, with the works fully entering the underground structural floor construction stage. Facing a tight schedule, a large total amount of rebar, and high installation precision requirements, the project department completed in 25 days the tying of more than 2,800 tons of rebar, nearly 350,000 meters in total, for the two main towers T3N and T3S, and the installation of 596 anchor bolts and 62 anchor bolt sleeves, with a maximum error of only 9 mm, far below the 2 cm installation requirement.
