Even amidst skyscrapers, underground space can be excavated and connected to surrounding buildings. On May 11, the reporter learned from the construction party that the underground space project in Lujiazui Central Area and the underground passages connecting three super high-rise buildings have been basically completed and will be put into use after acceptance.
Underground space includes evacuation hall and four passages
In the core area of Lujiazui in Pudong, where high-rises abound, buildings are adjacent but not interconnected, causing inconvenience for pedestrian traffic. The completed underground space and underground passages are located under roads such as Yincheng Middle Road, Century Avenue, Huayuan Shiqiao Road, and in the green space between the Jin Mao Tower.
Entering the completed Lujiazui underground space, the interior decoration such as suspended ceilings and floor tiles has been finished. The hall is spacious and bright, and the passages leading to surrounding buildings are more than 5 meters wide. According to Tang Shaojun, project manager of Shanghai Construction Group Machinery Construction Group, the central part of the underground space is a traffic evacuation hall with two levels, mainly for pedestrian passage. The spaces around the hall will also have commercial facilities in the future.

The Lujiazui Central Area underground space project has a total construction area of 6,400 square meters, including a two-story underground traffic evacuation hall, a sunken plaza, and two ground entrances. Around the traffic evacuation hall, four passages have been set up, respectively from the underground space to the Jin Mao Tower, from the underground space to the IFC, from the underground space to the Shanghai Tower, and from the Shanghai Tower to the Shanghai World Financial Center. "Pedestrians can shuttle among these four buildings through this underground space without crossing the streets. At the same time, it can also connect to Lujiazui Station of Metro Line 2 and has reserved space for future connection to Lujiazui Station of Line 14."
Although the total length of the four underground passages is only 105 meters, it was the most difficult part of the construction. According to technical personnel, during the construction of the underground passage project, three of the four towers were already in use, and the Shanghai Tower was under construction. Neither operational nor under-construction buildings could be affected by the construction. In addition, three of the four passages needed to cross busy traffic sections and crisscrossing municipal pipelines, making it impossible to excavate roads by closing traffic. To minimize the impact on the surrounding environment and address the low space utilization of circular cross-sections, the construction adopted the first domestically independently innovated large-section rectangular tunnel boring machine with non-excavation and "cicada shelling" technology.

Pedestrians cross roads via second-floor pedestrian bridges
Currently, pedestrians in the Lujiazui central area mainly cross roads via second-floor pedestrian bridges.
The pedestrian bridges consist of the Pearl Ring, Oriental Floating Garden, Century Sky Bridge, Century Corridor, and other parts, with a total length of about 1,300 meters. Through the second-floor pedestrian bridges, pedestrians can reach important commercial buildings and tourist attractions such as Super Brand Mall, Oriental Pearl Tower, IFC, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Lujiazui Central Green Space.
However, due to historical reasons, the small Lujiazui area lacks underground passage facilities. The second-floor pedestrian bridges are located north of the Jin Mao Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center, and there is also a lack of effective connection with the Shanghai Tower. At the beginning of the project, the Shanghai Tower intended to make up for the lack of underground passage facilities by connecting the three skyscrapers in Lujiazui underground to form a three-dimensional traffic network and maximize the alleviation of passenger flow evacuation problems.
The Lujiazui Central Area underground space will be put into use after acceptance. At that time, the underground passages and above-ground facilities will together form a three-dimensional pedestrian walkway in the Lujiazui central area, which will not only further improve the three-dimensional traffic system in the small Lujiazui area and achieve reasonable separation of pedestrians and vehicles, but also make connections between commercial buildings more convenient.
