According to the Shenyang Construction Engineering Information Network, the survey project for the south extension of Shenyang Metro Line 2 is planned to start at the end of this month. The preliminary survey is scheduled to begin on March 27 and end on May 10, lasting 45 days in total. Detailed survey work will be carried out according to project progress to meet the needs of metro construction. This means that construction is not far off. 　　According to the plan, the south extension of Line 2 will start from the south end of Quanyun Road Station, run along the green space between the Airport Expressway and the planned road east of the Airport Expressway, pass under the Airport Expressway, then turn right into Gaoshen East Road, turn left at the intersection of Gaoshen East Road and Zhihui 3rd Street into Zhihui 3rd Street, continue south along the centerline of Zhihui 3rd Street, turn left onto Jichang Road heading east, and terminate at the east side of the planned T3 Terminal of Taoxian Airport. The line is about 14.2 km long with 8 stations: Taoxian Street Station, Gaoshen East Road Station, Quanyun 3rd Road Station, Citizens' Square Station, Science and Technology Park Station, Taoxian Station, Terminal Station, and Taoxian Airport Station.
　　At present, the civil engineering works of Taoxian Airport Station have been completed in sync with the T3 Terminal. The current survey covers the engineering geology and hydrogeology of the stations other than this station, the south extension alignment (including turnback lines, stabling lines, access lines, and crossover lines), the depot and parking lot, and the main substation.
　　The survey project is divided into two sections. Section 1 covers: the running tunnel from the starting point to Taoxian Street Station, Taoxian Street Station, the running tunnel from Taoxian Street Station to Gaoshen East Road Station, Gaoshen East Road Station, the running tunnel from Gaoshen East Road Station to Quanyun 3rd Road Station, Quanyun 3rd Road Station, the running tunnel from Quanyun 3rd Road Station to Citizens' Square Station, Citizens' Square Station, the running tunnel from Citizens' Square Station to Science and Technology Park Station, the Citizens' Square main substation, and the connecting line (between Quanyun 3rd Road Station and Citizens' Square Station, connecting with Line 10). Section 2 covers: Science and Technology Park Station, the running tunnel from Science and Technology Park Station to Taoxian Station, Taoxian Station, the running tunnel from Taoxian Station to Terminal Station, Terminal Station, the depot, and the depot access line.
　　According to Shenyang Metro, after the survey is completed, the project will enter the design phase. Upon approval, civil construction will commence, with an estimated construction period of 4 years. Once completed, it will operate seamlessly with the existing Metro Line 2.
　　Based on current metro travel speed estimates, after the south extension of Line 2 is completed and opened, taking Line 2 from Shenyang North Railway Station directly to Taoxian Airport Station will pass through 20 stations and take about 40 minutes. From Shenyang Railway Station, transferring to Lines 1 and 2 to reach Taoxian Airport Station also involves 20 stations, with only additional transfer waiting time. In terms of both speed and cost, it will be superior to airport buses. During morning and evening peak hours, travel time by metro is more reliable and also has advantages over private cars.
