At around 4:50 a.m. on the 30th, at Entrance No. 1 of Zhongjiacun Station on Phase II of Subway Line 4 in Hanyang, a main water pipe burst, causing temporary water outages in surrounding areas and flooding the subway foundation pit to a depth of seven to eight meters, temporarily affecting construction.
The subway foundation pit under construction was suddenly flooded
The incident occurred at the intersection of Hanyang Avenue and Yingwu Avenue. The Zhongjiacun subway station under construction is surrounded by hoardings. Entering Entrance No. 1, the foundation pit was already full of water, and workers were using pumps to drain it.
Staff from the subway construction contractor and the Wuhan Water Group were both busy at the scene. A staff member from the subway construction contractor said the pipe burst may have been caused by aging, and that the flooding would temporarily affect subway foundation pit construction to some extent. Staff from the Wuhan Water Group said preliminary analysis suggested that subway construction had caused soil loss, which in turn damaged the main water pipe support and ultimately led to the pipe rupture.
At around 11 a.m. on the 30th, the official Weibo account of the Wuhan Municipal Government Emergency Office posted: At around 4:50 a.m., a water pipe with a diameter of 600 millimeters burst near Entrance No. 1 of Zhongjiacun Station on Phase II of Subway Line 4, cutting off water to residents in communities including Zhongjiacun, Maojiadi, Qintai Community, and Mindong International City. The Water Group was draining accumulated water, locating the damaged point, and carrying out emergency repairs at full speed to restore water supply as soon as possible.
On the evening of the 30th, the reporter contacted the Hanyang Water Supply Department of the Wuhan Water Group. Its staff said the accumulated water in the subway foundation pit was about seven to eight meters deep. After the incident, they closed both ends of the main water pipe, causing water outages in a certain area. By around 1 p.m., through reasonable allocation, water supply had been fully restored in the above areas, though water pressure was relatively low.
By around 8 p.m. on the 30th, the accumulated water in the foundation pit had been fully pumped out. Staff at the scene from the Water Group said the next step was to clear the silt first and then repair the pipeline. The Water Group sent more than 10 employees to work overnight and expected repairs to be completed by the early morning of the next day. They said they would also require the subway construction contractor to strengthen protection of water pipes to avoid similar incidents.
