At around 7 PM last night, a rainstorm turned the section beneath the railway bridge on Tiancun East Road in Haidian District into a giant pond, submerging 18 vehicles passing through. By 1 AM today, the standing water under the bridge had been pumped dry, and rescue workers were preparing to tow away the last few flooded vehicles.
At 11:30 PM last night, the water under the railway bridge on Tiancun East Road had largely been drained, but nine submerged sedans remained stuck in the mud, most with their windows left open and their interiors filled with leaves, mud, and other debris.
The walls on both sides of the railway bridge bore the marks left by the storm water, which indicated the water had reached a depth of two meters.
Several police cars were at the scene, along with several tow trucks removing the flooded vehicles. Multiple car owners said most of the submerged vehicles were sedans that could no longer be started, and nearly 10 had already been towed away.
Car Owners Abandon Vehicles to Flee for Their Lives
At 1 AM today, the car belonging to owner Mr. Zhang was still stuck in the mud awaiting rescue. He and several other owners said that when they drove to the area after 7 PM, a heavy rainstorm broke out, and when they reached the railway bridge on Tiancun East Road, they found the water beneath the bridge already several dozen centimeters deep. "I was afraid the water was too deep to drive through, so I parked by the bridge."
"In just about 20 minutes, the car was completely submerged." One owner said rainwater from all around poured under the bridge, and the water rose very quickly. Many drivers and passengers ran through the heavy rain to higher ground on both sides to take shelter. A photo taken by one owner at the time showed multiple vehicles submerged in the floodwater with only their roofs visible, and even several cars washed onto the sidewalk.
According to a notice from relevant departments, last night's short-duration rainstorm caused flooding on Tiancun East Road and Jushan Road, with 18 vehicles submerged on Tiancun East Road. In addition, hail fell in Yanqing and Changping, damaging some farmland and fruit trees.
