加入膨胀剂的原理是使混凝土凝结后体积产生微膨胀，来抵偿混凝土的凝结收缩应力，从而达到抗裂的目的。根据自防水混凝土要求，所掺加的膨胀剂，只有膨胀率大于等于0．35％的高效膨胀剂才能作为自防水混凝土的添加剂。如目前已有使用的膨胀剂UEA．明矾石膨胀剂等，利用膨胀剂在水化过程中的膨胀变形特性，达到补偿或部分补偿混凝土收缩的目的。
