Affected by recent tensions between China and Vietnam, Chinese enterprises in Vietnam have all suffered a certain degree of impact. As a result, the safety of Yuchai's Chinese sales staff in Vietnam and its market share there have become a recent focus of attention from many quarters.
It is understood that on May 11, well before the large-scale anti-China violence broke out in Vietnam, Yuchai's Chinese sales staff in Vietnam had all returned home to process visa procedures because their visas had expired. The sales and service operations of the Vietnam office, meanwhile, were maintained by locally hired Vietnamese employees. Tang Haidong, director of the Vietnam office, mentioned in introducing the office's operating model that localizing staff can enhance a company's competitiveness. Because they have a better understanding of local culture, living habits and ways of thinking, local employees can communicate better with customers and work efficiently.
Since formally setting up an overseas sales office in Vietnam in 1991, Yuchai has grown from initially cultivating the market by modifying complete vehicles locally to annual engine sales of more than 10,000 units in 2009; today, the engine population in Vietnam has reached more than 60,000 units. Through more than 20 years of effort, Yuchai has developed from product sales to brand sales, while further improving its service system and extending its product supporting network. Yuchai products are widely used in Vietnam's automobile industry, construction machinery, agricultural machinery, shipbuilding and other related fields. Yuchai's product quality, performance, after-sales service and spare parts support have all been highly recognized by the Vietnamese market. In terms of the volume of Chinese products entering Vietnam, Yuchai engines hold a market share of 45%-50%, including more than 80% in the 5-13T truck market, about 30% in the marine engine market, and relatively high shares in the construction machinery and bus markets. From January to April this year, Yuchai's volume entering Vietnam exceeded 3,600 units, close to the same period last year.
Yuchai hopes that the anti-China violence in Vietnam can be quelled as soon as possible and that the tensions between China and Vietnam can be eased at an early date so that the business environment can improve. As planned, Yuchai's Chinese sales staff will go to Vietnam to continue their work in early June after completing visa procedures.
