On May 20, Kirill Dmitriev, General Director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, told reporters that the first China-Russia cross-border railway bridge spanning the Amur River will begin construction in the near future and is expected to be completed before 2016.
Dmitriev said that after their talks in Shanghai, the heads of state of Russia and China signed a memorandum on investment in the construction of the cross-border railway bridge. He said: "This is the first Russia-China cross-border bridge. At present there are simply no bridges between the two countries—neither road bridges nor railway bridges."
He noted that construction of the railway bridge will begin within a few months, and "we hope the bridge can be completed before 2016." He said the railway bridge can shorten the route for transporting Russian goods to China by as much as 700 kilometers, and "will also significantly increase Russian exports." He said: "Every year, 21 million tons of goods can be transported to China via the railway bridge."
In addition, he disclosed that after the talks between Putin and Xi Jinping, two more memorandums were signed: one on investment in a logistics company and the other on cooperation in tourism.
