Recently, at the 42nd Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, the "Photonic Microsphere Array Biochip" project from Professor Gu Zhongze's research group at the State Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics, Southeast University, won a Special Gold Medal. This is one of the 4 projects that received Special Gold Medals among the 37 projects from 9 participating universities. At the same time, the "Fiber Optic Vibration Sensing System Based on Scattered/Reflected Light Carrier" project from Professor Sun Xiaohan's research group at the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Southeast University, won a Gold Medal, and the "Flywheel Energy Storage Device Using Memory-Type Stator Permanent Magnet Motor" project from Professor Cheng Ming's research group at the School of Electrical Engineering won a Silver Medal.
The "Photonic Microsphere Array Biochip" is a new generation biomolecular detection chip independently developed by Professor Gu Zhongze's research group at Southeast University. The chip contains a series of photonic microspheres encoded with photonic crystal structural colors, which can be combined with microplates and microfluidic chips to achieve simultaneous multi-component detection of samples. Since the structural color of photonic crystals originates from the reflection and interference of light by the ordered assembly structure of nanoparticles, compared with the existing fluorescent color-encoded microspheres on the market, photonic microspheres have unparalleled stability, greatly reducing detection costs, and have huge market competitiveness in fields such as disease diagnosis, food safety testing, and inspection and quarantine.
The Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions is the world's largest and oldest invention exhibition. This year, more than 1,000 inventions from 45 countries and regions were exhibited, attracting more than 60,000 visitors from around the world. The International Applied Science and Technology Development Collaboration Network organized and arranged 9 universities including Southeast University to send 37 innovative science and technology projects to the exhibition, and they won a total of 2 Special Grand Awards, 4 Special Gold Medals, 16 Gold Medals, 17 Silver Medals, and 4 Special Awards. The innovation and practicality of the exhibits were highly praised by the judges of the exhibition.
In recent years, Southeast University's invention patent applications and patent authorizations have grown at an average annual rate of more than 30%, ranking among the top six among universities affiliated with the Ministry of Education and first among universities in Jiangsu. According to the report "G20 Research and Innovation Performance and Its Impact on Global Major Economic Leaders' Decision-Making" released by the Essential Science Indicators SM (ESI) database in March 2014, Southeast University ranks 8th on the "Intellectual Property Research—2012 Global Invention Sharing (China Section)" list with 1,584 items, ranking 4th among national universities, following Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
