The award ceremony of the UIA-HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design will be grandly held at 13:30 on March 16, 2014 at CBC (China Building Centre) in Beijing. The award ceremony will invite many heavyweight jury members of the competition and renowned scholars and architects in the domestic architectural field as guests to attend this event. This competition is jointly organized by the International Union of Architects (UIA), the School of Architecture of Tianjin University (UTJ), and the magazine Urban Environment Design (UED) together with the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University (CQU), guided by the National Steering Committee for Architectural Education and the National Architectural Education Evaluation Committee, and exclusively titled by Shanghai HYP Architectural Design Co., Ltd. The UIA-HYP Cup competition has gone through two years. This international student architectural design competition, truly hosted by Chinese academic institutions, has become one of the most influential and credible student competitions with the largest scale, and has had a huge impact in the international and domestic architectural education circles. The successful holding of the two competitions not only built a platform for learning and exchange for architectural students at home and abroad, but also invited more and more architectural masters to join in, providing support and help for cultivating a new generation of architectural talents and realizing students' architectural dreams.
Looking back at 2013, the jury meeting of the UIA-HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design concluded on September 25, 2013 at Chongqing University. The famous French architect and Mies van der Rohe Award winner Dominique Perrault served as the chairman of the jury, and Cui Kai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, served as the executive chairman. The jury members included the famous Spanish architect Francisco Mangado, the famous Taiwanese architect Kris Yao, Zhang Qi, dean of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, Zhong Dekun, professor of the School of Architecture of Southeast University, Zhao Wanmin, dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University, Shan Jun, vice dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Peng Lixiao, editor-in-chief of Urban Environment Design (UED) magazine, and Gong Jun, executive director, general manager, and design director of Shanghai HYP Architectural Design Co., Ltd., as well as other well-known scholars and architects from architectural practice and education circles. The jury meeting was moderated by Kong Yuhang, vice dean of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University. After four rounds of review—preliminary review, initial evaluation, re-evaluation, and final review—1 first prize, 3 second prizes, 10 third prizes, 23 excellence awards, and 40 shortlisted awards were finally selected from 778 works from home and abroad. Among them, the work Time-Imprint by Xing Teng and Liu Xiaoyang from the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, China, stood out and won the first prize of this competition. Other winners came from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University, the University of Pennsylvania, the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, and other outstanding architectural schools.
With the successful holding of the UIA-HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design, we have discovered more outstanding and promising reserve talents in architectural design, and at the same time effectively enhanced students' sense of competition and practical ability in architectural design. While awarding the winners of last year, the UIA-HYP Cup 2014 International Student Competition in Architectural Design will also be fully launched. The competition is internationally hosted by the International Union of Architects (UIA), organized by the School of Architecture of Tianjin University (TJU) and the magazine Urban Environment Design (UED), co-organized by the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University and the magazine World Architecture, and jointly guided by the National Steering Committee for Architectural Education, the National Architectural Education Evaluation Committee, and the Architectural Art Committee of the China Artists Association. The highly anticipated competition theme will continue the theme of the previous two editions, "Architecture in Transformation," and the chairman of this year's jury, Mr. Daniel Libeskind, has set the competition topic—"Unexpected City." We look forward to each student proposing new propositions and giving new answers.
Here, we warmly welcome and invite outstanding architects at home and abroad, numerous architectural students, people from the cultural and artistic circles, and professionals in architecture-related industries to attend the "UIA-HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design Award Ceremony" for exchange, to review the wonderful moments of the competition together, and to look forward to the future development of the architectural field.
