On January 10, Zoomlion's "Key Technologies and Applications of Super-Large Tower Cranes" project won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Huang Qun, general manager of Zoomlion's Construction Hoisting Machinery Company, stated that the R&D strength and manufacturing capability of super-large tower cranes represent a company's industry position in the tower crane field. Zoomlion's breakthrough and promotion of key technologies for super-large tower cranes have broken the monopoly of foreign products in this field, marking a leap of Zoomlion tower cranes from "Made in China" to "Created in China."

With the continuous emergence of high-rise buildings, large energy facilities, long-span bridges and other structures, green and efficient large-scale modular construction has become an inevitable trend in large engineering construction. Large-scale modular construction usually requires the support of lifting equipment with large lifting capacity, large lifting moment, large working radius, large lifting height and high reliability.

Mobile cranes have limited lifting height and working radius, while super-large tower cranes can rise with the building and offer a large working radius, making them the best choice for large high-rise construction. The key to developing super-large tower cranes is achieving an ultra-large working radius, ultra-large lifting height and safe operation under heavy-load conditions. This technology has long been monopolized by foreign countries, and tower cranes required for key domestic projects mainly relied on imports. For certain construction needs such as super-large bridges and venues, foreign products could not meet the construction requirements either. For example, in the construction of the Ma'anshan Yangtze River Bridge in China, the middle tower consists of prefabricated modular steel segments, requiring the crane to lift a 220-ton module to 200 meters at a radius of 23.7 meters, meaning the tower crane needed "double two hundred" lifting capability with a lifting moment of 52,000 kN·m. At that time, no tower crane on the market could meet this construction requirement.

To meet the development requirements of large-scale modular construction in China, the project team, relying on the National Science and Technology Support Program during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, devoted itself to research and development, broke through the technical bottlenecks of super-large tower cranes, and successively overcame three major difficult topics: the design and control technology of ultra-long heavy-load booms, the design and control technology of heavy-load winch systems with ultra-large rope capacity, and the safe operation technology of super-large tower cranes. They formed a complete set of super-large tower crane technologies and completed a series of super-large tower crane products with lifting moments ranging from 4,000 kN·m to 52,000 kN·m and maximum working radii from 60 meters to 110 meters, achieving mass production and sales and thereby breaking the foreign monopoly. The series of super-large tower crane products developed in this project competed with international peers from Germany, France, Australia and other countries and successfully won bids for key national projects such as the Shanghai Hongqiao Transportation Hub, the Ma'anshan Yangtze River Highway Bridge and the Nantong Tianshenggang Power Plant, and completed the construction tasks successfully.

Some key technologies of the project promoted the technical upgrading of more than 30 medium- and small-sized tower cranes, improved overall product performance, and won high recognition from users worldwide. Zoomlion tower cranes have become a well-known global tower crane brand, achieving batch exports to third-world countries and successfully entering developed countries in Europe and America. Since 2009, Zoomlion tower cranes have ranked first in global tower crane market share for five consecutive years.

General Manager Huang Qun pointed out that in the R&D and manufacturing of super-large tower cranes, Zoomlion not only leads the industry development in China but is also catching up with advanced international levels. Super-large tower cranes encourage large buildings to convert most on-site construction into factory-made large modules, which are then transported to the site for installation, greatly improving construction quality, reducing pollution, lowering energy consumption, shortening construction periods, greatly improving construction efficiency while reducing investment costs, and powerfully driving the transformation of engineering construction technology. The development of products such as the D5200 and D1250 is only a start; we will continue to strengthen breakthroughs in key technologies for super-large tower cranes, thereby driving the technical upgrading of related products in the industry as well as the development of construction and other related industries.
