Sharing the 10 Trillion Investment Feast: Zoomlion Sounds the Horn for a Second Takeoff in the Environmental Industry

With the conclusion of the National Environmental Protection Work Conference, Zoomlion (000157, stock bar), which is committed to advancing the development of the environmental industry and holds a leading position in the R&D and production of products such as kitchen waste treatment and high-concentration wastewater treatment, will join other enterprises in the environmental industry to share in the 10 trillion yuan investment feast.

The National Environmental Protection Work Conference held on January 9 showed that in 2014, water pollution control and soil pollution control will join air pollution control in forming the "three major battles" of environmental protection work. Zhuang Guotai, Director of the Department of Nature and Ecology Conservation of China's Ministry of Environmental Protection, said that the investment in the "three major battles" "may reach a scale of hundreds of billions of yuan."

Statistics from environmental protection departments show that among China's seven major river systems, nearly 40% of river sections are no longer suitable as drinking water sources; in urban waters, 78% of river sections are unsuitable as drinking water sources; and about 64% of urban groundwater is polluted.

Faced with such a severe situation, Zoomlion, as an urban environment expert, has in recent years been committed to the R&D and production of wastewater treatment products and has achieved notable results. In 2013, Zoomlion successfully won the bid for one of Hunan Province's top ten environmental protection projects, the supporting project for urban sewage treatment plants and domestic waste treatment facilities: the Xiangtan Shuangma Landfill Leachate Treatment Project, and smoothly passed water quality monitoring.

In addition, through continuous technological breakthroughs, Zoomlion has successfully turned kitchen waste into a valuable resource. Data show that China produces more than 50 million tons of kitchen waste each year, and this huge amount of waste not only puts enormous pressure on the environment but also threatens people's health. In 2008, Zoomlion established the "Kitchen Waste Resource Utilization" project team, invested substantial R&D funds and technical talent, and cooperated with multiple domestic universities and research institutions to develop a world-class harmless, reduced, and resource-based kitchen waste treatment system with independent intellectual property rights.

In 2011, Zoomlion Environmental Industry Co. successfully won the bid for the Changsha Kitchen Waste Treatment Plant construction project and provided complete sets of equipment for the collection, transportation, and treatment of kitchen waste for the project. In June 2012, the project smoothly passed various tests and began treating more than 300 tons of kitchen waste per day in Changsha. The plant can produce more than 5,400 tons of biodiesel annually, generate 19.71 million kWh of electricity, save 6,900 tons of standard coal annually, and reduce carbon emissions by 19,500 tons annually, achieving both economic and environmental benefits.

At almost the same time, Zoomlion Chairman Zhan Chunxin announced that Zoomlion would transform from focusing on the construction machinery sector to advancing five major sectors in parallel: construction machinery, agricultural machinery, environmental industry, heavy trucks, and finance.

"The environmental industry will become Zoomlion's second-largest business after the construction machinery industry. With the deepening of urbanization and increasing public attention to environmental protection, the market for environmental machinery and equipment will be larger than the construction machinery market." At the 12th Beijing International Construction Machinery Exhibition held in October 2013, these remarks by Vice President Sun Changjun once again highlighted Zoomlion's determination and confidence in its green development strategy.

Zhou Shengxian, Minister of Environmental Protection, pointed out at the just-concluded National Environmental Protection Work Conference that it is necessary to "improve the development mechanism of the environmental protection industry and guide the demonstration, promotion, and application of environmental protection technologies."

Recently, Zoomlion's Lugu Second Industrial Park was completed. This is an important step for Zoomlion in developing the environmental industry, guiding the promotion and application of environmental protection technologies, and achieving mass production. The industrial park is mainly used for the R&D and production of nearly 100 varieties in nine major categories of environmental industry products, including sanitation machinery, kitchen waste treatment, and high-concentration wastewater treatment. Once the project reaches full production, it will become the largest and most advanced R&D and production base for sanitation and environmental protection equipment in China.

Public information shows that Zoomlion's Lugu Second Industrial Park has reached trial production conditions and will officially begin production this year. Previously, Chen Peiliang, Vice President of Zoomlion and General Manager of the Environmental Industry Company, said in an interview that in 2014, Zoomlion's Lugu Second Industrial Park will form a production capacity of more than 10,000 sets of various types of sanitation machinery and equipment. In the future, the industrial park's output value can exceed 10 billion yuan.

"The commissioning of Zoomlion's Lugu Second Industrial Park means that Zoomlion has officially sounded the horn for a second takeoff in the environmental industry." Chen Peiliang's statement demonstrated Zoomlion's determination and confidence to become a leading enterprise in the environmental industry.
