The "Three Highs" Phenomenon in the Building Waterproofing Industry Draws Widespread Criticism

Public attention to building waterproofing has risen to unprecedented levels, owing to the strange "Three Highs" phenomenon in the waterproofing industry: namely, waterproofing materials and technical standards are increasingly high, acceptance pass rates are increasingly high, and the leakage rate during building use is also increasingly high—dubbed "high standards, high acceptance, high leakage."

Experts from the Engineering Construction Quality Management Branch of the China Construction Industry Association pointed out at a waterproofing forum that the leakage rate of construction projects in China has reached 80%, a truly startling phenomenon. In response, experts stated that low industry concentration, demand-side indifference to waterproofing performance, non-standard construction practices, vicious competition within the industry, and the prevalence of counterfeit products have caused problems in the waterproofing industry to emerge one after another.

Zhu Dongqing, Chairman of the China Building Waterproofing Association, pointed out that building waterproofing is not only related to the residential quality of property owners but also to building safety and building lifespan, making it an issue that enterprises, associations, and management departments at all levels cannot avoid. In order to promptly report and eliminate various hidden risks in industry operations and to quickly coordinate and resolve various issues, the China Building Waterproofing Association has established an interview system—a system whereby the association, when it deems necessary, invites the heads of member enterprises for face-to-face discussions on a particular issue or issues. The scope and content of such interviews include: product quality and engineering quality, safety production, market regulation and unfair competition, intellectual property rights, peer disputes, environmental protection complaints, and more.

A relevant official from the China Building Waterproofing Association stated that establishing an interview system for member enterprise heads is a way to carry out industry self-discipline. When major fluctuations or major problems occur in industry operations and adverse hidden risks arise, promptly interviewing the heads of relevant enterprises can safeguard the healthy and orderly development of the industry.
