Three rotary drilling rigs over 20 meters tall have been positioned and begun drilling pile foundations, marking the official start of construction at certain nodes of Section 4 of the South Second Ring Expressway. This section runs from Fengzhou Road intersection to Yuanjing 2nd Road, with a total length of about 4.1 km. According to Cheng Hongwei, head of the project management department, this year's work mainly involves pile foundation construction, along with the construction of some piers, pile caps, and retaining piles required for underpass construction, with the goal of completing the main works by the end of 2014.

Construction on the other three sections of the South Second Ring Expressway project will break ground successively. The South Second Ring Expressway project runs from Horqin South Road in the east to the junction of the Southwest Second Ring in the west, with a total length of about 19 km.

The elevated expressway along the entire line is 5 km long, divided into two sections: West Second Ring—Biopharmaceutical Factory East Road, and Zhaojun Road—Hulun Road; the underpass expressway along the entire line is 1.8 km long; the entire line has a total of 6 interchanges, namely the West Second Ring Interchange, Yunzhong Road Interchange, Zhaojun Road Interchange, Xing'an Road Interchange, East Second Ring Grade-Separated Interchange, and Yuanjing 2nd Road Interchange; 3 diamond interchanges, namely the Bayannur Road node, Zhaowuda Road node, and Exhibition Hall East Road node; 13 pairs of at-grade entrances and exits, 2 pairs of parallel ramps, and 10 overpasses/pedestrian passages. The South Second Ring Expressway is designed for a speed of 80 km/h, and upon completion all at-grade traffic lights will be eliminated. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2015.

It is also learned that next year Hohhot will launch construction of three expressway projects on the east, north, and west lines, striving to complete within about five years a "田"-shaped extended urban expressway network to alleviate urban road congestion.
