School Overview
The School of Civil Engineering at Central South University traces its origins to the Department of Railway Construction and the Department of Bridge and Tunnel Engineering of the Central South Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, established in 1953. The discipline of civil engineering dates back to the Road Engineering Section of the Hunan Higher Industrial School founded in 1903. Since the establishment of Changsha Railway University in 1960, the school (department) has undergone several name changes: in 1970 it was called the Department of Railway Engineering, in 1984 it was renamed the Department of Civil Engineering, and in 1997 the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture was established. After the founding of Central South University, related departments were merged in May 2002 to form the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Central South University. After 2011, it was renamed the School of Civil Engineering. Through more than 60 years of development, the school has grown into a teaching and research entity with a strong faculty, comprehensive programs, a rational structure, outstanding achievements in discipline and degree construction, advanced research levels, and remarkable outcomes.
