The "Jinghua" shield tunneling machine, equivalent to the height of a five-story building, can not only autonomously sense geological changes ahead, but also travel beneath the city without disturbing it in the slightest. China's shield tunneling technology is transforming from a "steel behemoth" into an "underground intelligent robot."
Underground in Beijing, during construction of the Qinghuayuan Tunnel on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway, when a Fuxing train quietly passed just 5.4 meters directly below Metro Line 10, passengers noticed nothing at all.
Surface settlement was strictly controlled within 1 millimeter—behind this is a dual leap in both the "IQ" and "EQ" of domestically developed shield tunneling technology.

01 "X-ray Vision" and a "Smart Brain": Cracking Unknown Underground Risks
"Large tunnels that cross rivers and seas are major projects in China's infrastructure sector, and super-large-diameter shield tunneling machines are the key decisive equipment ensuring project construction," said Yang Huayong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In the past, tunnel construction was like "blind men feeling an elephant," and sudden changes in geological conditions often led to collapses, water inrush, and other accidents.
Today, the application of advanced geological forecasting systems has fitted shield tunneling machines with "X-ray vision," capable of detecting geological conditions 100-300 meters ahead.
This system, developed by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry, analyzes seismic wave signals to identify risk sources such as faults, fracture zones, and water-rich areas in advance, providing scientific early warning and guidance for construction.
The intelligent tunneling system, meanwhile, serves as the shield machine's "smart brain," automatically adjusting tunneling parameters based on the sensed geological information.
Vice President Xiong Chenjun offered a vivid analogy: "This is equivalent to fitting domestically developed shield tunneling machines with 'X-ray vision' and a 'smart brain.'"

02 Millimeter-Level Micro-Settlement Control: Performing Microsurgery on the Heart
"Construction in urban core areas is like 'performing microsurgery on a beating heart,'" described Zhao Bin, deputy director of the Large Shield Tunneling Company of China Railway 14th Bureau Group.
Construction of the Qinghuayuan Tunnel not only had to pass directly beneath Metro Line 10, but also cross 7 major arterial roads and 88 municipal pipelines, while "brushing past" Metro Line 13.
Any tiny mistake could lead to catastrophic consequences.
The four-in-one micro-settlement control technology independently developed by China Railway 14th Bureau—"source control, path isolation, object reinforcement, and early warning correction"—achieved millimeter-level control of surface settlement.
This precise control capability is reflected not only in the Qinghuayuan Tunnel; in the construction of the Changjiang Liyang Hub, the "millimeter-level smart eye" monitoring technology applied by Jiangxi Port Group likewise kept monitoring accuracy within 1 millimeter.

03 Breakthroughs in Independent Technology: From Being Constrained by Others to Global Leadership
The rise of China's shield tunneling machines is a history of struggle through independent technological innovation.
"We conquered the full-chain technology of tunneling machine main bearings—'design, materials, manufacturing, and testing'—breaking foreign monopolies," proudly introduced Xiong Chenjun, vice president of the Tunneling Machine Research Institute of China Railway Construction Heavy Industry.
The team independently developed the world's largest integral main bearing, with a diameter of 8.61 meters and a weight of 62 tons.
Atmospheric cutter-change technology cut the time for a single cutter change from 12-15 days to 2-3 days, boosting efficiency by nearly 80%.
The independently developed adaptive pressure compensation sealing system achieves a 15-bar pressure-bearing capacity and has been successfully applied in the Pearl River Estuary Tunnel of the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway, 106 meters underwater.
These breakthroughs have enabled China's shield tunneling machines to move from reliance on imports to independent innovation, and to be exported to more than 50 countries and regions across five continents.

04 Green and Intelligent Advancement: Win-Win for Efficiency and the Environment
In the complex-environment shield tunneling construction of Dalian Metro Line 5, the team developed a full-chain technical system of "precise exploration—targeted treatment—intelligent and efficient construction—all-domain three-dimensional monitoring."
In the construction of Qingdao Metro Line 5, the project team introduced a slurry filter-press separation system to achieve waste reduction and resource recovery.
They also carried out intelligent upgrades to electric locomotives, designing a dual-guarantee system of anti-fatigue sensing pedals and pneumatic interlocking brakes.
China Railway 14th Bureau, meanwhile, developed green slurry treatment technology, processing up to 5,000 cubic meters of waste slurry per day and achieving "zero discharge and zero pollution" for the project's 1.3 million cubic meters of waste slurry.
The application of fully prefabricated assembly and intelligent construction technology saved nearly 6 months of construction time for the track-bed structure alone.
With technological development, the future of intelligent construction machinery is heading toward higher levels of autonomy.
In the coal mining industry, intelligent tunneling technology has already adopted tunneling equipment with four capabilities: perception, memory, learning, and decision-making.
These devices use intelligent control as the hub, leveraging 5G+ network communication technology to integrate data on working-face equipment, personnel, and environment, enabling intelligent operation of major processes such as excavation, support, and transport.
Jiangxi Port Group's "millimeter-level smart eye" monitoring technology has built a "safety protection net" covering a 160,000-square-meter construction area, installing an "intelligent early-warning brain" for nearly 300 core monitoring indicators of the 1,700-meter cofferdam.
When evaluating China Railway 14th Bureau's technical system, Academician He Chuan emphasized that the technology is "a masterwork that solves a series of difficult problems."
At the construction site of the Liyang Hub of the Changjiang Waterway Improvement Project, surveying robots act like tireless "safety sentinels," automatically tracking monitoring points 24 hours a day, leaving millimeter-level deformation nowhere to hide.
The number of personnel required for a single monitoring round has been reduced from 6 to 3, while monitoring accuracy has greatly improved.

From breaking foreign monopolies to leading the world, from steel giants to intelligent systems, the enhancement of the "IQ" and "EQ" of China's shield tunneling machines is reshaping the future landscape of the infrastructure industry.
